Use an AI code reviewer as an extra, focused pass over a pull request or local diff—not as a substitute for tests, security checks, or human approval. Give it the change’s intent and repository-specific context, investigate each finding, and verify fixes before merging. AI review can surface useful leads, but it can also produce false alarms or miss real defects.

How to use AI code review before a merge

  1. Choose a focused change

Review a pull request or a clearly scoped diff so the tool can relate its findings to the code being changed. For example, Amazon Q Developer’s IDE review can use the active file’s git diff by default when asked to review code, and can also review a file or project. GitHub documents Copilot code review for pull requests. See Amazon Q code reviews and GitHub Copilot code review.

  2. Supply project context

Tell the reviewer what the change is meant to do, relevant architecture or conventions, sensitive areas, and what tests should cover. GitHub supports repository custom instructions and AGENTS.md for Copilot code review. GitHub says the instructions are read from the pull request’s head branch, so inspect changes to review instructions just as carefully as other proposed code. Details are in GitHub’s code review instructions.

  3. Ask for actionable findings

Describe the intended behavior and ask the reviewer to flag concrete correctness, edge-case, security, and regression risks. Request the affected code and the reasoning behind each concern. This is a practical prompt structure, not a tested formula or a guarantee that the reviewer will find defects.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  4. Verify every finding

Check whether the reported problem applies to the actual code and intended behavior. Reproduce it or add a focused test when practical. Reject unsupported findings; track both false positives and known issues the tool missed when assessing whether it helps your team.

  5. Run independent checks

Keep the project’s tests and appropriate static-analysis, secrets, dependency, and security checks in the merge process. AWS describes Amazon Q review categories that include SAST, secrets detection, infrastructure-as-code issues, deployment risks, and software composition analysis. Its documentation also describes filtering for unsupported languages, test code, and open-source code; check the current coverage against your own repository rather than assuming every changed file is reviewed. See AWS’s review documentation.

  6. Keep human review and merge controls

A person still needs to judge whether a finding matters in context, whether a proposed fix is correct, and whether the change is ready to merge. Published evaluations include examples of missed vulnerabilities, so an AI reviewer should not be your only security control. A 2025 preprint examining Copilot against deliberately insecure and known-vulnerability datasets reported files reviewed without vulnerability-relevant comments; its results apply to the datasets and product version it tested, not every current workflow. See the preprint.

How the main review workflows differ

Workflow Documented use Important qualification
GitHub Copilot code review Reviews pull requests, identifies issues, and suggests fixes; repository instructions can provide additional context. See GitHub’s feature overview and usage instructions. Availability is tied to paid Copilot plans; organizational policy and AI-credit details can matter. Confirm current plan eligibility and settings in GitHub’s documentation and your organization.
Amazon Q Developer Can review changes, files, or projects in an IDE, with documented code-quality and security review categories. Its GitHub integration can review newly created or reopened pull requests and post threaded findings with suggested fixes. See IDE review details and GitHub integration details. AWS documentation surfaced for the GitHub feature marks it as preview. New commits do not automatically trigger another review; a reviewer can request a pass with /q review. Check the current documentation for status and behavior.
CodeRabbit OpenAI’s vendor case study describes CodeRabbit using code history, linters, code-graph analysis, issue tickets, and developer conversations before multi-model analysis. See OpenAI’s CodeRabbit case study. This is a vendor-facing account of the system, not independent evidence of bug-detection performance.

How to interpret published performance figures

Study results are useful context, but their numbers describe particular tools, repositories, datasets, and methods. They do not establish a universal hit rate or predict what your team will see.

  • Automated Code Review In Practice (2024 preprint): The authors reported that 73.8% of automated comments were resolved. In the observed setting, average pull-request closure duration rose from 5 hours 52 minutes to 8 hours 20 minutes; trends varied by project, and practitioners generally described minor code-quality improvement. These findings do not show that automated review universally speeds delivery or improves quality. Read the 2024 preprint.
