Tap the address bar, choose AI Mode, and enter a question. You can also add open tabs, images, or a PDF as context when the option is available on your device.
What AI Mode in Chrome’s address bar does
AI Mode brings a Google Search experience into Chrome’s address bar. It is designed for questions that need more than a simple search, including multipart questions and follow-ups. Responses can include links to relevant web pages, and Chrome may show search suggestions related to the page you are viewing. Google’s announcement describes the feature and its initial U.S., English-language rollout.
AI Mode is a Search feature built into Chrome, not a separate extension. Google’s Chrome AI page says no extension is required.
How to search with AI from Chrome on Android
- Open Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap the address bar.
- Choose AI Mode. If you do not see it, see the availability section below.
- Type your question and submit it.
- Read the response and follow its links when you want to check sources or explore the topic further. You can ask follow-up questions in AI Mode.
These are the steps in Google’s Chrome Help instructions for Android.

Add a tab, image, or PDF as context
For a question about something you are viewing or a file you have, open the address bar’s menu and add context before asking. Google lists these available context types in its Android instructions:
- The current tab or multiple open tabs
- A photo taken with the camera
- An image from your gallery
- A PDF file
For example, you can ask about information across open tabs or ask a question about an image or PDF. The specific context options you can use depend on what is available in your Chrome interface.

Why AI Mode may not appear
AI Mode is not available to everyone or on every device. Google says it is expanding gradually beyond the United States and to additional languages, so availability can depend on your device, location, and language. Chrome 139’s release notes also document the start of the AI Mode entry-point rollout in the new-tab omnibox on Android and iOS; that records the beginning of a rollout, not universal access. See the Chrome 139 release notes and Chrome Help for Google’s availability details.
If the option is missing, there may be nothing to enable locally: your device or region may not have received access yet. Check again later as Google expands the rollout.

History, activity, and accuracy
Google recommends Web & App Activity for the best experience. AI Mode still works with that setting off, but you cannot resume where you left off with previous searches. Google also notes that deleting AI Mode searches may not remove them from Search history; those entries may need to be deleted separately. Details are in Google’s Android help page.
Google cautions that “AI responses may include mistakes.” Treat a response as a starting point, and verify important details using linked sources or other reliable references.
