Two-step verification protects sign-in to the Google Account that manages your YouTube channel; it does not change how an encoder connects. Sign in to YouTube Studio, copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room, then enter them in the encoder. Your authenticator code or other second-step code does not go in OBS or another encoder.
Before you start: make sure the channel can go live
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, according to YouTube Help.
- Live streaming must be enabled for the channel. YouTube says first-time enablement can take up to 24 hours.
- You need access to the Google Account that manages the channel, plus any second-step method it requests.
If you have not enabled live streaming before, complete that step ahead of your planned broadcast rather than waiting until you are ready to connect the encoder.
How do I use my YouTube stream key with 2-step verification?
- Sign in to your Google Account. Enter your password and complete the second-step or passkey challenge if prompted. Available methods can include a Google prompt, passkey, hardware security key, authenticator code, or backup code. Keep a recovery method available. Google advises users not to share verification codes.
- Open the stream in YouTube Studio. Choose Create → Go live → Stream. Create a stream or select an existing one. In the Live Control Room, open the stream settings to view the stream URL and key. Previously used stream settings may load the prior key.
- Configure your encoder. If the encoder offers a YouTube destination, select it and follow its sign-in or connection flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field, and copy the stream key into its stream-key field.
- Preview before broadcasting. Check the Live Control Room preview and confirm that video and audio are working. YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom rather than using all available capacity; its guidance specifies 20% room. Test your setup and monitor audio and video during the event.
YouTube describes stream keys as password-like credentials: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep yours private.
Where do I enter my YouTube stream key?
Enter it in the encoder’s Stream Key field. Put the separate YouTube stream URL in the encoder’s Server, RTMP URL, or equivalent destination field. Field names vary by encoder, but the two values have different jobs: the URL identifies the ingest destination; the key identifies your stream.

Do not paste your Google password, authenticator code, or other two-step verification code into the stream-key field. If an app asks you to sign in to Google, prefer its Sign in with Google option when available. Google says app passwords are not recommended and are unnecessary for most apps; they are a fallback for apps that cannot use that sign-in method.
Does my authenticator code go in OBS?
No. An authenticator code is for signing in to or re-authenticating your Google Account. OBS and other encoders send the configured stream feed using the stream URL and stream key; they do not need your two-step verification code. If you are prompted to authenticate in a third-party app, use its supported Google sign-in flow rather than entering a verification code as a stream key.

Why can’t I go live after verifying my YouTube account?
Channel verification and live-stream access are separate checks. YouTube also requires live streaming to be enabled, and first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. If you cannot open Studio, resolve the Google Account sign-in challenge first; if Studio opens but the encoder will not connect, check the URL and key fields.
How do I reset a YouTube stream key?
If the key may have been exposed, reset it from the Stream tab in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace the old value in your encoder with the new one. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, send it in an unsecured message, or include it in a screen capture you share. Resetting the key without updating the encoder will prevent that encoder from connecting with the old value.

Troubleshooting common connection and access problems
