Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf your Windows PC has stopped playing sound, connect headphones or speakers to a USB audio adapter, plug the adapter into a compatible PC port, then select its audio device in Settings > System > Sound > Output. Check that the device is not muted and that the app is sending audio to it. If Windows cannot detect the adapter, troubleshoot the device and its driver; an adapter is an alternative output path, not a guaranteed fix for every sound problem.
1. Check the simple causes first
Before changing devices or drivers, confirm the headphones or speakers are connected securely, powered on, and not muted. Check the volume and mute controls on the accessory, in Windows, and in the app you are using. A muted app or a different output selection can make a working audio device seem broken. Microsoft’s Windows sound troubleshooting guide recommends checking these controls.
2. Connect the adapter and choose it as the output
- Plug the USB audio adapter into a suitable USB port on the PC. Connect your headphones or speakers to the adapter, and power them on if they need external power.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, select the device entry for the USB adapter. Play audio to test it, and check Windows and app volume if you still hear nothing.
Microsoft Support notes: “If you’re connecting to an audio device—such as headphones or speakers—using USB or HDMI, you might need to set that device as the default audio device.” The Microsoft troubleshooting article explains how to choose an output device.
If Windows shows the adapter but an individual app remains silent, check that app’s own audio output setting. Some apps can route sound to a different device than the one selected for Windows.

3. If Windows does not show the adapter or any output device
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers. If the audio device is listed but disabled, enable it.
- In Device Manager, choose View > Show hidden devices, then check the audio-device list again.
- Choose Action > Scan for hardware changes and see whether the device appears.
- If it is still missing or not working, install the current audio driver from your PC maker or audio-device manufacturer, then restart Windows and check the output list again.
These steps follow Microsoft’s guidance for resolving missing or unavailable audio devices. Use the driver intended for your PC or device rather than an unrelated download.
4. Check USB-C adapter compatibility
USB-C audio adapters are not all interchangeable. Microsoft explains that analog and digital USB-C audio adapters differ, and many PCs support only digital USB-C audio adapters. If Windows reports an analog adapter as unsupported, use a compatible USB-C digital audio adapter. Check the PC’s port and the adapter’s type before choosing a replacement; a USB-C connector alone does not establish audio compatibility. See Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guidance.

5. If the adapter is selected but playback is still poor
If the device appears in Windows but audio is distorted or otherwise problematic, try turning audio enhancements off or changing the audio format in the device’s sound properties. Microsoft includes these as troubleshooting options in its Windows sound guide. Test playback after each change so you can tell whether it helped.

A USB adapter can give Windows another audio output device to use instead of the PC’s built-in audio path. It may help when the built-in output is unavailable, but it cannot be assumed to fix every driver, Windows setting, application-routing issue, or internal hardware fault. If the adapter is detected and selected but sound still fails, continue troubleshooting the specific device or software problem rather than assuming another adapter will resolve it.
