A piston is a redstone-powered block that pushes blocks and entities one block in the direction of its wooden face. A sticky piston does the same thing, but attempts to pull the block directly attached to its head when it retracts.

The important limits are simple: one activation moves a block only one block, a piston can move at most 12 blocks in one activation, and some blocks cannot be moved at all. Slime and honey blocks can connect several blocks into one moving structure, but they do not increase the 12-block limit.

What pistons do

A normal piston has two states:

  • Retracted: the piston occupies one block.
  • Extended: its piston head occupies the adjacent block in its facing direction and pushes the first block in front of that head.

A piston stays extended for as long as it receives power. When the power stops, a normal piston retracts and leaves pushed blocks where they are.

A sticky piston retracts in the same way, but it also attempts to pull the block immediately attached to its head back into the space in front of the piston. It does not automatically return every block it previously pushed. The block must be movable, and there must be room for it to return.

How to craft a piston

Make a piston in a crafting table using three wooden planks, four cobblestone, one iron ingot, and one redstone dust.

Plank Plank Plank
Cobblestone Iron ingot Cobblestone
Cobblestone Redstone dust Cobblestone

To make a sticky piston, combine one piston with one slimeball in the crafting grid. The two ingredients do not need a special arrangement.

Sticky pistons can also generate naturally in jungle temples. Naturally generated locations can vary by edition and version, so crafting is the dependable method if you need one.

How to place a piston in the right direction

  1. Hold the piston in your hotbar.
  2. Stand on the side from which you want the piston to push.
  3. Place it while looking toward the block or structure it should move.
  4. Check the wooden face before wiring the piston.

The wooden face indicates the piston’s pushing direction. A frequent mistake is building the redstone circuit first and discovering that the piston is facing sideways or backward. Break and replace the piston if its orientation is wrong.

The piston itself uses one block of space. When powered, the piston head extends into the adjacent block, and the first block beyond that head is the first block affected.

How to power a piston

You can activate a piston with redstone dust, a redstone torch, a redstone block, a lever, a button, a pressure plate, an observer, or another valid redstone power source.

The quickest test is a lever:

  1. Place the piston facing a removable block.
  2. Place a lever next to the piston.
  3. Switch the lever on.
  4. The piston should extend and push the block one space.
  5. Switch the lever off. A normal piston retracts; a sticky piston also tries to pull the adjacent block back.

For a simple torch setup, place the redstone torch next to or below the piston. In the documented Bedrock examples, a torch in front of the piston does not power it, and a torch placed on top of the piston does not power it. A redstone block placed on top of a piston does power it.

Redstone dust distance

Redstone dust loses one signal-strength level for every block of dust away from its power source. A redstone torch and a redstone block provide signal strength 15, but a long dust trail can become too weak before it reaches the piston. If a piston at the end of a line does nothing, shorten the line or add a repeater where appropriate.

Powering the circuit is not the same as powering the correct side of the piston. Confirm both the piston’s facing direction and the final dust connection.

Basic piston examples

Push a block with a lever

  1. Place a piston facing the block you want to move.
  2. Leave the destination block space clear.
  3. Place a lever beside the piston.
  4. Activate the lever.

This creates a one-block push. The piston does not move the block several spaces in one activation, even if it is sticky.

Make a retractable block

  1. Place a sticky piston facing an empty space.
  2. Place the block you want to move directly against the sticky piston’s head.
  3. Power the sticky piston with a lever or redstone circuit.
  4. Turn the power off.

The sticky piston should pull the attached block back if the block is movable and the destination space is available. If the block remains behind, check whether it is immovable, whether another block blocks the destination, or whether the design depends on Java- or Bedrock-specific behavior.

The 12-block movement limit

A piston can move a maximum of 12 blocks in one activation. This includes the blocks connected into the moving structure. If the structure is longer or otherwise exceeds the limit, the activation can fail.

Slime blocks and honey blocks are useful because they attach to neighboring blocks and allow one piston to move a structure rather than a single isolated block. They do not remove the 12-block limit.

Material Use Important limitation
Slime block Connects to adjacent blocks and can carry them when pushed Still counts toward the 12-block limit
Honey block Connects blocks for moving structures Has different attachment behavior from slime

Slime and honey do not adhere to exactly the same neighboring blocks. A flying machine or door mechanism that works with slime may need a different layout with honey. Test the attachment pattern before building a large machine.

Blocks pistons cannot move

Power does not let a piston override the game’s movement rules. Signal strength controls whether the piston activates; it does not make immovable blocks movable.

Examples of blocks that pistons cannot push or pull include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bedrock
  • Obsidian
  • Spawners
  • Jukeboxes
  • Portal frames
  • Sculk

Many fragile blocks, including plants, eggs, and redstone circuitry, break rather than being moved. A piston may therefore activate while the block in front disappears instead of traveling with the mechanism.

Movement can also fail when:

  • A connected structure contains an immovable block.
  • The structure contains more than 12 movable blocks.
  • The destination space is occupied.
  • A block cannot fit in the space created by the movement.
  • A sticky piston is asked to pull an invalid or immovable block.

Piston timing and edition differences

For Bedrock Edition, Microsoft’s redstone guide lists piston timing as one tick to extend and zero ticks to retract. Real contraptions can still behave differently depending on the circuit, update order, and the timing of other components.

Do not assume a Java Edition tutorial works identically in Bedrock Edition, or vice versa. Differences can matter in designs using:

  • One-tick pulses
  • Observers
  • Block-update order
  • Quasi-connectivity
  • Movable block entities
  • Sticky-piston block spitting

If a compact mechanism works in a video but not in your world, first check the edition and version used by the tutorial. Then test the circuit in a copy of your world before rebuilding it.

Using commands to get a piston

With commands enabled, use these item IDs:

/give @s minecraft:piston 1
/give @s minecraft:sticky_piston 1

@s targets the player or command executor. Use in-game autocomplete or /help give if your edition or version requires a different command form.

Enable commands in Bedrock Edition

Commands require cheats. In Bedrock Edition, enabling cheats disables achievements for that world, so make this choice before enabling them in a survival world where achievements matter.

For an existing world, the documented permission path is:

  1. Open the pause menu.
  2. Select the player or permissions icon beside your player name.
  3. Enable Operator Commands.

For world creation or editing, look for Activate Cheats and Command Blocks in the world settings. Command blocks are enabled by default according to Microsoft’s current guide, but cheats are still required for command use.

Troubleshooting a piston that does not work

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The piston does not extend No valid power reaches it Check the final dust connection, lever state, torch position, and signal distance.
It moves in the wrong direction The piston was placed facing the wrong way Break and replace it with the wooden face aimed at the target.
It extends but does not move the block The target is immovable or the structure cannot fit Test with an ordinary stone or dirt block and clear the destination.
Only part of a structure moves Blocks are not attached as expected Review slime/honey attachment behavior and count the connected blocks.
A sticky piston does not pull the block back The block is not directly attached, is immovable, or has no room to return Check the block immediately in front of the piston head and the return space.
The design works in a tutorial but not in your world Edition, version, or timing differences Compare Java versus Bedrock and test the pulse timing.

Practical design checklist

  1. Face the piston toward the intended target.
  2. Test it with a single ordinary block before connecting a large structure.
  3. Confirm the destination space is clear.
  4. Count every block in the connected structure; stay at or below 12.
  5. Use a sticky piston only when you need the directly attached block pulled back.
  6. Keep immovable and fragile blocks out of the moving section.
  7. Check redstone dust distance and the location of torches or redstone blocks.
  8. Match the tutorial’s Minecraft edition and version.

FAQ

What is the difference between a piston and a sticky piston?

Both push blocks when powered. A sticky piston also attempts to pull the block directly attached to its head when it retracts. It does not pull every block that was pushed.

How many blocks can one piston move?

A piston can move up to 12 blocks in one activation. Slime and honey blocks can connect multiple blocks, but the complete moving structure still cannot exceed 12 blocks.

Can a piston move obsidian or bedrock?

No. Obsidian and bedrock are among the blocks pistons cannot push or pull. Redstone power cannot override that rule.

Why does my sticky piston not pull a block back?

The block may not be directly attached to the piston head, may be immovable, or may not have a valid empty space to return to. Edition-specific piston behavior can also affect advanced designs.

Can a piston push a block more than one space?

Not in one activation. A piston moves a block one block per activation. Repeated activations can move it farther.

Does a redstone torch on top of a piston power it?

In the documented Bedrock examples, no. A torch must be next to or below the piston in that arrangement. A redstone block placed on top does power the piston.

Do slime blocks and honey blocks remove the piston limit?

No. They help attach blocks into a moving structure, but the piston’s maximum remains 12 blocks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will enabling cheats affect my Minecraft world?

In Bedrock Edition, enabling cheats disables achievements for that world. Consider using a test or creative world if achievements matter.

The Bottom Line

Use a normal piston to push a block and a sticky piston when the directly attached block must return on retraction. Face the wooden end toward the target, provide valid redstone power, keep the moving structure at 12 blocks or fewer, and avoid immovable or fragile blocks. For advanced builds, always account for the differences between Java and Bedrock Edition.
