To keep food from drying out in a microwave air fryer combo, use the exact model’s manual or preset, arrange food in a loose single layer, and check it before adding more time. Air-fry mode uses circulating hot air to brown and crisp the surface, which can also dry it; choose microwave or another supported mode when you want quick cooking without a crisp exterior.
Why air-fry mode can dry food
Microwave and air-fry modes cook differently. Microwave mode uses microwave energy, while air-fry mode circulates heated air with a fan to brown and crisp the outside. That surface-drying effect is useful for crispness, but it can leave food drier than intended if you cook it longer than needed.
Some combos also offer a mode that uses hot air and microwave energy together. It is intended to speed cooking, but it is not interchangeable with microwave-only or air-fry mode. Gorenje’s manual notes that hot air dries the surface more, so follow your appliance’s instructions for the specific food and setting.
Choose the mode for the texture you want

Use this workflow to avoid overcooking
- Identify your model’s modes. Find the owner’s manual for the exact appliance and distinguish its microwave, air-fry, convection or hot-air, grill, and combination functions. Labels and capabilities vary by model.
- Use a compatible accessory. For air frying, use the supplied basket or an accessory the manufacturer explicitly approves for your model. Do not assume another brand’s basket or a generic metal tray will fit or be safe in the cavity. Follow the manual’s cookware rules.
- Prepare evenly sized pieces. Similar-size pieces are easier to cook consistently. Arrange them in a single layer where the recipe or manual calls for it, leaving gaps for airflow instead of packing the basket.
- Start with the model’s preset or instructions. Enter the instructed weight or quantity when the preset asks for it. For manual cooking, stay within the appliance’s temperature limits; treat recipes written for other appliances as starting points, not guaranteed settings.
- Check at the recipe’s first check point. If the food is cooked, stop. If it needs more time, add a short increment and check again rather than automatically extending the full cook. There is no universal timing rule for preventing dryness.
- Turn or flip as directed. Follow prompts from the appliance, or use the recipe’s turning point for manual cooking.
- Catch drips only as the manual permits. For juicy meat or vegetables, some instructions allow a microwave-safe dish beneath the raised basket. Use oven mitts, and avoid handling a hot basket by its foldable feet.
Why you should not copy another model’s temperature
Presets, temperature ranges, cooking times, and cookware rules vary. Manufacturer examples illustrate those differences; they are not universal combo-microwave settings.

- Whirlpool describes a model with a 400°F default for manual air fry and presets for categories including potatoes, vegetables, nuggets, wings, and fries. Its guidance directs users to the owner’s manual for specific information.
- GE’s instructions for the referenced manual air-fry feature list selectable temperatures of 300, 325, 350, 375, and 425°F.
Those different examples are a practical reason to use your own appliance’s manual rather than transferring a temperature from another brand.

Small adjustments that support crispness without excess dryness
- Keep food spaced so hot air can reach its surfaces; avoid a packed pile.
- Use a light layer of oil if appropriate for the food. Whirlpool advises that it can help crisp food and warns against wet batters, which can make a mess: Whirlpool’s air-fry guidance.
- Monitor progress and stop when the food is done instead of relying on conventional microwave or oven timings.
- If you do not want a crisp surface, choose microwave mode or another mode your model supports for that food.
