How to use a MacBook Pro with a touchscreen without losing trackpad shortcuts: keep using the MacBook’s built-in keyboard and trackpad while you touch a compatible external display. You do not have to replace trackpad gestures or keyboard shortcuts with touchscreen input. Apple’s MacBook Pro specifications list a built-in Force Touch trackpad and external-display support, but those video-output specifications do not establish touchscreen input compatibility for the built-in screen or any particular external monitor.
Can you use a touchscreen with a MacBook Pro?
Apple documents the MacBook Pro’s built-in display, external-display output, and Force Touch trackpad. It does not document touch input for the built-in display or validate third-party touchscreen monitors. An external display may be an option, but whether touch works depends on the exact monitor and software setup—not simply on whether the Mac can send video to it. Before buying a touchscreen, confirm with its manufacturer that touch input is supported for your exact MacBook Pro model and macOS version. Check the connection type and display size and resolution as well as touch support. Video-output compatibility alone does not prove that the Mac will receive the monitor’s touch input.
Keep using the trackpad and keyboard alongside touch
Touching an external display does not inherently require you to stop using the MacBook’s built-in input devices. Apple describes the keyboard, mouse, and trackpad as primary Mac input tools, and documents keyboard shortcuts as alternatives to actions performed with a trackpad, mouse, or another device. You can use touch for direct interaction on a compatible display and reach for the trackpad or keyboard whenever that is quicker or more comfortable. Apple’s external-display limits vary by MacBook Pro configuration and describe display and video output—not touchscreen input. If direct touch is not essential, the built-in trackpad already provides gestures for scrolling, zooming, page navigation, and app switching without adding a display.
