A Mac mini needs an external screen for a conventional setup: connect a monitor, projector, or TV to one of the video-capable ports on its rear, then add a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. A MacBook’s built-in screen is not documented as a direct display input for the mini. If you have both Macs, Apple’s Universal Control can share a keyboard and pointer while each computer keeps its own screen.
What you need for a Mac mini desk setup
- A display: a monitor, projector, or TV with a compatible video input.
- A video connection: a cable that matches the Mac mini’s rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C port and the display’s input. If the connectors differ, use a compatible adapter.
- Input devices: a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. They can connect to the mini directly, or you can use Universal Control with a nearby Mac.
Apple says the Mac mini’s HDMI and Thunderbolt/USB-C ports support video output. The front USB 3 ports are not video outputs. See Apple’s display connection guide and adapter guidance.
How to connect and configure the display
- Identify your Mac mini model. Check its specifications before choosing a display, particularly if you care about resolution, refresh rate, or using multiple displays.
- Check the display’s input. Match it to a rear HDMI or Thunderbolt/USB-C video output. Use a cable with the right connectors, or select an adapter that supports the display mode you intend to use.
- Connect and power the display. Select the corresponding input on the monitor or TV if it does not switch automatically.
- Adjust macOS display settings. Open System Settings > Displays to change available resolution and refresh-rate options, arrange displays, and choose mirroring or an extended desktop.
- Connect a keyboard and pointing device. Use the devices with the mini, or configure Universal Control if you also want to work across a nearby Mac.
What monitor works with a Mac mini?
There is no single monitor specification that applies to every Mac mini. Compatibility depends on the exact model, the port used, and how many displays are connected. Apple’s current specifications list support for up to three external displays for both Mac mini M6 and M5 Pro configurations, but supported resolutions and refresh rates depend on the model and display configuration. Check Apple’s technical specifications for your model rather than assuming a particular maximum applies to every mini.
For the physical connection, compare the ports on the back of the mini with the inputs on your display. HDMI-to-HDMI is straightforward when both have HDMI. A display with USB-C or DisplayPort may require a suitable cable or adapter from the mini’s Thunderbolt/USB-C output. Adapter availability and supported modes vary, so check the adapter’s specifications as well as the monitor’s.

Can you use a MacBook as the Mac mini’s monitor?
Do not expect an ordinary HDMI or USB-C cable between the two computers to turn a MacBook’s built-in screen into a standard monitor for the mini. Apple documents video output from the mini to external displays, but the cited Apple guidance does not document a MacBook as a direct display input.
If the goal is to access the mini from a MacBook, that is a separate remote-access or screen-sharing workflow, not a direct display connection. The required setup depends on the macOS versions and the method used.

Can you share a keyboard and mouse between the Mac mini and MacBook?
Yes. Apple’s Universal Control lets you move a pointer between nearby Macs and use one keyboard, mouse, or trackpad across them. It shares input; it does not make the MacBook a display for the mini. The computers continue showing their own screens and apps. Apple describes the feature in its Universal Control guide.
