Use the lowest airflow that moves the debris, keep the nozzle close to the ground, and sweep in short, controlled passes toward one planned collection point. Check the wind and clear people, pets, buildings, windows, doors, and neighboring property from the debris path before you start. For very dusty surfaces, lightly dampen the area; for hazardous dust such as silica on clothing or protective equipment, use an appropriate contained cleanup method instead.
Set up the job before switching on the blower
Check the tool and its manual
Read the instructions for your exact blower: controls, safety features, and operating directions vary by model. Check that the controls and safety devices work, and do not modify the tool except as the manufacturer directs. STIHL’s safe-use guide advises consulting the manual and avoiding unstable positions such as ladders, rooftops, or trees.
Choose a destination and check the wind
Decide where the debris will go—a pile, curbside collection point, or bin—before you begin. Check wind direction and intensity, then plan a route that does not carry material toward people, pets, homes, open windows, doors, freshly washed vehicles, or neighboring property. Keep bystanders clear of the work area.
Use controlled, low sweeps
Keep the nozzle low and extended
Use the full nozzle extension and start with the airflow aimed at ground level. Position it so air moves the leaves rather than lifting them into the air. Practice controlled side-to-side or up-and-down nozzle movement and adjust the throttle as needed; STIHL covers nozzle control and ground-level airflow in its backpack blower safety manual.

Start with the lowest effective speed
Use only enough throttle to move the material. STIHL recommends the lowest engine speed necessary: stronger airflow can carry debris farther than intended and raise dust. Work in sections, making deliberate passes that move the material into a growing pile instead of sending it across the entire area.
Gather the pile rather than relocating it
Once the debris reaches the planned collection point, put it in a rubbish bin or other appropriate container. Do not solve a scattering problem by blowing the pile onto someone else’s property; STIHL’s guidance on courteous use calls for keeping debris on your own property and collecting it.

Reduce dust—and know when not to blow
Lightly dampen very dusty surfaces
For ordinary outdoor cleanup in very dusty conditions, STIHL recommends slightly dampening the surface before blowing. This is not a substitute for a suitable method to control hazardous dust. STIHL also cautions against using a blower for large amounts of gravel or gravel dust, construction dirt, plaster dust, cement or concrete dust, or dry garden topsoil; see its leaf blower safety tips.
Do not use a leaf blower to clean silica from clothing or PPE
A leaf blower disperses dust rather than containing it. In an August 19, 2020 interpretation, OSHA said that blowing silica dust off clothing and personal protective equipment may increase employee exposure in many situations, and identified a suitable small HEPA-filtered vacuum as an alternative an employer could consider. OSHA also clarified that its interpretation letter addresses the facts in the original inquiry and does not create new or additional requirements. This is workplace guidance about silica dust; it is not a blanket prohibition on outdoor leaf blowing. Read the OSHA interpretation.

Protect yourself and others while operating
- Never point an operating blower at a person or pet. STIHL states: “Don’t point an operating blower in the direction of people or pets.”
- Wear eye and hearing protection as directed by the model’s manual, and use suitable footwear and stable footing.
- Do not operate while standing on a ladder, rooftop, tree, or other unstable surface.
- Do not use a blower indoors or in a poorly ventilated area.
- For work near traffic or moving equipment, account for those hazards and protect the work area. Caltrans’ 2026 safe operating procedures identify traffic, equipment, excessive noise, airborne dust, and unstable footing as hazards and call for appropriate PPE, footwear, and hearing protection.
Choose equipment for control and collection
If you are choosing a tool for this task, prioritize features that help control where debris goes rather than assuming a particular model will prevent scattering.
