For a smoother blowout with lift at the roots, start with towel-dried, detangled hair, rough-dry it until mostly dry, then shape small sections by lifting at the roots and guiding the brush down the lengths. Finish each section with the tool’s cool setting. Exact modes, heat settings, and dryness targets vary by model, so follow your brush’s manual.

Before you start: prepare your hair and brush

  • Gently towel-dry and detangle your hair. Apply heat protectant if your tool’s manufacturer recommends it; Revlon’s VersaStyler instructions include this step. Heat protectant does not guarantee that hair will be free from heat damage.
  • Read the manual to identify the rough-dry and styling modes, heat settings, and cool setting. Some brushes have separate dryer and styling modes; others work differently.
  • Divide your hair into manageable sections and secure the sections you are not working on.

How to use a hot air brush, step by step

  1. Rough-dry your hair. If your brush has a dryer or rough-dry mode, use it before shaping. Revlon’s VersaStyler instructions recommend rough-drying to about 80% dry; Dyson’s Airwrap guide gives approximately 85% as its example. These are model-specific targets, not a universal rule. Aim for mostly dry hair and use the target in your own tool’s instructions.
  2. Choose a manageable section. Revlon recommends sections about 2–3 inches wide. If your hair is thick or curly, smaller sections may make it easier to move the brush steadily through the hair.
  3. Lift at the root. Place the brush beneath the section near the scalp and lift the hair away from the head. This creates root lift before you guide the brush down the length. Dyson’s Airwrap guide also describes brushing underneath sections and lifting side sections from below.
  4. Smooth the lengths. Keep the brush moving in a slow, steady pass from roots toward ends. Follow the tool’s instructions for how to hold and move its head; avoid lingering in one spot.
  5. Shape the ends. For a bouncy finish, gently turn the brush through the ends. To direct the ends up and away from your face, angle and turn the brush accordingly while guiding the hair through.
  6. Set the section. Use the brush’s cool setting or cool shot on the shaped section, then release it and move to the next. Revlon specifies its cool mode; Dyson gives 5–10 seconds as an Airwrap example, not a standard duration for every brush.
  7. Repeat and check. Continue section by section until your hair is dry and styled. If a section remains damp, dry it before moving on rather than treating a partly wet section as finished.

How to get more volume without losing smoothness

  • For lift, start with the brush beneath the hair at the root and raise the section away from the scalp before moving downward.
  • Keep sections small enough that the brush can travel through them steadily. Revlon’s 2–3-inch guidance is a product example; your hair density and brush size may call for a different section.
  • Use a gentle turn at the ends for bounce. Directing the ends up and away from the face changes the finish without changing the basic roots-to-ends sequence.
  • Use the lowest heat setting that works for your hair and follow the manual. Revlon advises starting on low and increasing heat only as needed.

Heat and dryness: what the numbers mean

There is no single dryness percentage or heat setting for all hot air brushes. Revlon lists three heat settings for its VersaStyler and a maximum air temperature of 212°F; that is a specification for that product, not a typical or recommended temperature for every brush. Revlon also says damage can vary with hair condition.

Likewise, Dyson’s approximately 85% dry target applies to its Airwrap guide, while Revlon’s approximately 80% target applies to its VersaStyler instructions. Use these as examples of rough-drying before detailed styling, not as interchangeable requirements.

Dyson says its Airwrap sensors check temperature around forty times per second and that the device stays under 302°F (150°C). Its comparison page also discusses changes to hair at higher temperatures, attributing that discussion to a 2015 book by Jennifer Mary Marsh, John Gray, and Antonella Tosti. Those are manufacturer claims about Dyson products and should not be treated as independently verified safety thresholds or as instructions for other brushes.

REVLON One-Step Volumizer Hair Dryer and Styler, 2.8 in Barrel, Black
  • Full-bodied blowouts: The 2.8 in oval barrel smooths hair while rounded edges help create lift, volume, and curled ends
  • Best for longer lengths: Choose this larger-barrel dryer brush for mid-length to long hair and a classic, high-volume blowout
  • Dry and style in 1 step: Use on damp hair to dry, smooth, and volumize without juggling a separate dryer and round brush
  • Control your finish: Select Cool, Low, or High to tailor airflow and heat to your styling needs
  • Smooth with tension: Nylon pins and tufted bristles help grip and guide hair for controlled styling from roots to ends

When the technique needs to change

Your brush has separate modes

Use the dryer or rough-dry mode to remove most moisture, then switch to the styling mode for section-by-section shaping if the manual directs you to do so. Revlon describes the VersaStyler as having dryer, blowout-brush, and thermal-brush modes.

Your brush has no separate rough-dry mode

Do not assume that it should be used on very wet hair. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the appropriate starting dryness and method; the cited 80% and 85% examples belong to specific devices.

REVLON One-Step Volumizer Plus Hair Dryer and Styler, 2.4 in Barrel, Black
  • Closer-to-root styling: The smaller 2.4 in oval barrel offers added control for root lift, soft waves, flips, and curls
  • Best for shorter lengths: Choose Volumizer Plus for chin length to mid-length hair or when you want more precision than a 2.8 in barrel
  • 6 heat settings: Select Cool, Low, Medium, or High for more styling control across drying, shaping, and refreshing
  • Detachable for storage: Remove the brush head for compact storage and easier packing; the detachable design also enables dryer use
  • Detangle and smooth: Charcoal-infused pins and tufted bristles help detangle, grip, and guide hair while creating a polished finish

You are using a different kind of styling tool

Dyson’s Airsmooth has its own technique: its instructions describe applying leave-in conditioning spray to damp hair, gliding the straight edge downward for smoothing, and using the curved edge for waves and flicks. That guidance is for the Airsmooth, not a substitute for instructions for a conventional hot air brush.

If the finish is not coming out as expected

  • The roots look flat: Place the brush beneath the section closer to the roots and lift the hair away from the scalp before moving down the lengths.
  • The hair is still damp: Spend more time rough-drying before detailed shaping, using the dryness guidance for your model.
  • The brush tugs or the section is difficult to control: Detangle first and try a smaller section. Revlon recommends 2–3 inches for its VersaStyler and notes that slow, steady movement is especially useful for thick or curly hair.
  • You are unsure which heat or mode to use: Check the manual rather than applying another model’s setting. Start low and increase only as needed if that matches the manufacturer’s directions.

What to check when choosing a hot air brush

If you are comparing tools, check whether each has a separate rough-dry mode, what heat and airflow settings it offers, the brush-head shape and size, how easily the head can reach the roots, and whether the maker provides clear model-specific instructions. These are useful comparison criteria, not a tested ranking of products.
