Then ask the connected assistant to navigate to a URL and use Playwright MCP’s browser_take_screenshot tool. The setup works on one machine as well as across a container or remote host, provided the client can reach the server.
Here, “hosted” means a separately running server that you operate; the documented HTTP setup is a self-hostable pattern, not proof of a managed cloud service. If you only need an API call that returns a screenshot, rather than a browser controlled through MCP, see ScreenshotNeo as an alternative.
Choose between a local launch and a separate server
There are two ways to connect Playwright MCP, and the right one depends on where you need the browser to run.

Playwright’s official documentation describes the second arrangement as an HTTP server and shows port 8931 with the endpoint http://localhost:8931/mcp. That address works only for a client on the same host. For a container or another machine, replace localhost with a host name or address that the client can actually reach.

Prerequisites
- Node.js 20 or newer.
- An MCP client that can connect to a server over HTTP, or launch a local MCP process.
- For a separate server, a network path from the client to the server’s HTTP endpoint.
Playwright’s installation documentation says the browser downloads automatically on first use. Plan for that initial download and ensure the server environment can complete it. Playwright MCP is headed by default; use --headless when the environment should run without a visible browser window. The documentation lists Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge as browser choices.
Start Playwright MCP as a separate HTTP server
On the machine or container that will run the browser, start the server with the HTTP port. For a container or other remote deployment, bind to all interfaces with --host 0.0.0.0 so traffic can reach the process through the environment’s networking configuration.
- Start locally for a same-host test:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --port 8931 - Start for a container or remote host:
npx @playwright/mcp@latest --host 0.0.0.0 --port 8931 - Connect the client to
http://localhost:8931/mcpfor the same-host case. For a remote deployment, use the externally reachable host name or address and the routed port, keeping the/mcppath.
The port and command above express the documented HTTP setup. In a deployment, binding to 0.0.0.0 is not the same as making a service publicly reachable: the container network, firewall, proxy, and any service routing must also permit the client’s connection.
Point an MCP client at the endpoint
Client configuration formats differ. In a client that accepts a remote MCP server URL, enter the server endpoint as http://localhost:8931/mcp for a same-host test, or substitute the reachable server address for a remote deployment. If the client instead expects to launch a command, use the client-launched configuration described in the next section; do not enter a remote URL into a field intended for a local process command.

Confirm that Playwright MCP’s tools appear before trying to capture a page. The client must be able to reach the endpoint from its own runtime, which may differ from your laptop when the client itself is running in a container or hosted environment.
Use the connected server to capture a screenshot
Once connected, ask the assistant to visit a page and take a screenshot. For example:

The documented screenshot tool is browser_take_screenshot. It can capture a page screenshot in PNG, JPEG, or WebP, and can also capture an element. Depending on the MCP client, the assistant may return the image in the conversation or save it by a supported workflow; do not assume that every client writes the image to a local file automatically.
For normal interactions, Playwright MCP uses accessibility snapshots: the assistant gets roles and text with references it can use to click or fill controls. A screenshot is useful for visual verification, but you do not need to make every interaction pixel-based. Ask for the screenshot after navigation, after a meaningful action, or when you need to inspect the rendered result.

Configure a client-launched server for local use
If the client and browser should run on the same machine, the simpler arrangement is to let the MCP client start Playwright MCP rather than maintaining a separate HTTP server. Configure the client to launch npx @playwright/mcp@latest as its MCP server process, then connect using that client’s normal local-server workflow. The exact settings file and JSON shape depend on the client, so use its own documented MCP configuration format rather than copying a remote-URL example into a command-based configuration.
This local path is convenient for personal use and avoids remote endpoint routing. It is not the right choice when the browser must run in a different machine or container from the client; in that case, use the separate HTTP setup above.
Choose interaction mode, browser, and session state
Accessibility snapshots or vision mode
Start with the normal snapshot interaction model for ordinary websites. It gives the assistant semantic page information such as roles and text, which is generally more reliable than guessing locations from pixels. Enable the optional vision capability when the interface is mainly visual or its controls are not represented usefully in the accessibility tree—for example, canvas or WebGL applications, maps, image editors, charts, or specialized widgets. Vision mode adds coordinate-based mouse tools that can use a screenshot to locate and operate those controls. It is a fallback for pixel-dependent tasks, not a prerequisite for taking screenshots.
Browser choice and viewport
Playwright MCP documents Chrome, Firefox, WebKit, and Microsoft Edge as browser choices, along with configurable viewport size. Select a target browser and viewport deliberately when the screenshot must represent a particular browser or screen size. A capture made at one viewport can differ from a capture at another because responsive layouts change; comparisons are meaningful only when those conditions are consistent.

Persistent or isolated profiles
Playwright MCP uses persistent profiles by default, so login state, cookies, and local storage can survive between sessions. Choose this when preserving an authenticated session is necessary and the server’s stored browser state is appropriately protected. Isolated mode starts fresh and writes nothing to disk; an initial storage-state file can be loaded when a clean context still needs authentication data. Protect any saved authentication state as a secret, and avoid retaining it in an environment where other users or processes can access it.
Proxy and shared context
The server supports proxy settings. Configure a proxy when the browser’s route to the target site requires one, and distinguish that from the MCP client’s route to the server: those are separate network connections.
The --shared-browser-context option lets connected clients share one browser context. Use it only when shared state and shared control are intentional; clients in that context can affect the same session. If clients need separate browser state, do not enable this option merely to make the server multi-client.
Security: treat the server as a privileged tool
Playwright’s documentation warns that its arbitrary JavaScript tool runs in the server process and is “RCE-equivalent” and should only be enabled for trusted MCP clients. A browser server that can execute code or access authenticated pages should not be treated as a harmless screenshot endpoint.
- Only connect MCP clients that you trust with the server’s browser and any credentials available to it.
- Do not expose the server to the public internet on the assumption that an origin allowlist or file-access guardrail provides isolation. Playwright documents these as convenience defenses, not security boundaries; redirects can bypass their intent.
- Use client-level permissions and deployment controls for actual isolation. Secret redaction is also described as a convenience, not a security boundary.
- Protect persistent profiles and any initial storage-state files, since they can contain authentication state.
If you do not need arbitrary JavaScript execution, do not enable that capability. Keep the server’s reachable clients and network scope limited to the workflow that needs it.
Troubleshoot connection and capture problems
The client cannot connect
Check the endpoint from the client’s point of view, not just from the server host. A client in another container cannot normally use its own localhost to reach the server container. Replace it with the address provided by the container network or deployment, verify port routing and firewall rules, and retain the /mcp path.

The server starts but is unreachable remotely
Confirm that it was started with --host 0.0.0.0 in the hosted-container case, and that the deployment routes the chosen port to the client. Binding to all interfaces only opens the process to interfaces in its environment; it does not configure the host platform or a proxy to forward traffic.
The client or proxy fails server pings
The HTTP server sends heartbeats and has a five-second timeout by default. If a proxy or client does not answer server pings quickly enough, use PLAYWRIGHT_MCP_PING_TIMEOUT_MS to extend the timeout. Setting it to 0 disables the timeout; do so only when that trade-off is appropriate for the deployment.
The page looks different from the expected screenshot
Check that the target browser, viewport, profile mode, and authentication state match the intended capture. For controls the assistant cannot identify semantically, enable vision mode rather than expecting accessibility snapshots to expose every visual interface.
The browser is not ready on first use
The browser downloads automatically on first use according to Playwright’s installation documentation. Allow for that setup and verify the server environment can download and launch the selected browser. A successful MCP connection by itself does not establish that the browser installation or page navigation has completed.

Does the Playwright MCP HTTP endpoint make the server a managed hosted service?
No. The documented setup explains how to run a separate HTTP server yourself; it does not establish a managed cloud offering.
