To use a Commodore 64 font on a website without breaking readability, apply it selectively to short display text—such as a heading, label, or logo-like element—and keep paragraphs in a familiar text face. Load a font file with CSS @font-face only when its license permits web use, provide a fallback, and test the page at larger text sizes, on narrow screens, and with the characters your site needs.

Choose a font by license, format, and glyph coverage

“C64 font” describes an aesthetic, not a shared license or a single character set. Before deploying a font, check whether its terms permit web embedding, which file formats are supplied, and whether it contains the language, punctuation, and symbols your site uses. Do not assume that permission for one C64-inspired font applies to another.

Font option Reported details What to verify before use
Style C64 Pro / C64 Pro Mono The package page lists TTF, OTF, WOFF, WOFF2, and EOT files and describes 304 unique C64 glyphs. Its license permits embedding supplied variants with @font-face under conditions: do not modify the files and retain their supplied filenames. It prohibits selling the font, distributing it for direct download, or including it in a font collection. Check the current terms and test the needed characters.
zeiche/c64font The repository lists TTF and OTF files; its README describes Latin, PETSCII, box-drawing, block, and other mappings and states CC0 1.0. Confirm the license for the specific file you plan to deploy. Check whether a browser-ready format is available; convert only if the license allows it.
Pet Me 64 Kreative Korp identifies it as the 40-column Commodore 64 version in its Pet Me family and describes added Unicode/PETSCII support. Inspect the current download terms and confirm coverage for your site’s text.
haabe/retro-fonts C64 variants The repository describes C64 variants in WOFF and WOFF2, Latin subsetting, a CSS example, and free personal and commercial use. Verify the current repository license and the terms for the exact package; a repository description is not a substitute for the license text.
Sixtyfour Fontelio describes Jens Kutílek’s monospaced C64/Amiga-inspired design and identifies SIL OFL 1.1. Verify the source project and license file. Treat it as inspired by the aesthetic, not necessarily a faithful original C64 character set.

For any candidate, compare permission to serve it as a web font, available web formats, resemblance and spacing, character coverage, and how it renders at the intended size. The listed details can change; consult the source project and license before implementation.

Embed the font with CSS

CSS @font-face describes a font and where the browser can find it. The example below is generic: use a real file path and family name, and only use a file whose license allows web embedding.

@font-face {

  font-display: swap;
}

.c64-display {
  font-family: "C64Display", "Courier New", monospace;
}

Apply the class only to the elements that need the retro look, rather than changing the entire site’s typography. The font-display: swap declaration lets the browser show fallback text while the custom font loads. Keep visible words as text instead of converting them into images: text remains selectable and searchable, and the browser can scale it. Use a fallback face so text still renders if the custom file fails to load. Style’s license, for example, requires the supplied files to remain unmodified and retain their original filenames, so do not rename or convert those files unless the current terms permit it. W3C describes web fonts and CSS @font-face; neither replaces the font’s own license.

Keep long-form text readable

A highly stylized face can make sustained reading harder, so reserve it for short display elements when that is the effect you want. This is practical design guidance, not a WCAG rule requiring a particular font family or restricting C64 fonts to headings. Use a conventional face for paragraphs when the C64 design makes letterforms harder to distinguish or slows reading.

THEC64 Mini - Black Edition
  • A glorious half-size recreation of the iconic C64 in a striking black finish
  • 25 of the highest rated new games, including; Sam’s Journey, A Pig Quest, Steel Ranger and Knight ‘n’ Grail
  • High Definition output at 720p 50 or 60Hz
  • Play in original 4:3 or pixel perfect aspect ratios, with or without CRT filters
  • Save your progress in one of four save-game slots per game, and return at any time
  • Use the font where it has a clear purpose: short headings, labels, or logo-like text are easier to scan than long passages in a decorative face.
  • Check character coverage: preview the exact words, diacritics, punctuation, and symbols used on the site. Missing glyphs may appear as fallback characters or empty boxes, creating a visibly inconsistent line.
  • Keep actual text in the page: CSS styling preserves text content; an image of text does not adapt in the same way when a reader enlarges text or uses text-selection tools.

Test accessibility and responsive behavior

Resize text to 200%

WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.4 says that, except for captions and images of text, text can be resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality. Test enlargement in the browser and look for clipped words, overlapping lines, truncated navigation, and fixed-height containers that hide content. W3C WAI’s explanation of Resize Text describes the criterion.

Check text contrast

WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 1.4.3 sets a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for ordinary text and 3:1 for large text, subject to the criterion’s exceptions. Do not assume a retro color palette has enough contrast; check the actual foreground and background colors. See W3C WAI’s explanation of Contrast (Minimum).

Check narrow screens and font-loading failure

Test the page at narrow viewport widths and with text enlarged. Confirm that words wrap, navigation and controls remain usable, and the page does not develop horizontal overflow. Also disable or block the custom font and confirm that the fallback stack still presents the content clearly.

Confirm the license before hosting

Keep a record of the font’s source, version, and license. A font installed on a computer is not automatically cleared for self-hosting or conversion: Microsoft’s font FAQ distinguishes CSS naming of installed fonts from hosting font files and converting Windows fonts. Follow the exact terms for the file you deploy.
