To upload an image for a Roblox experience, open it in Roblox Studio, go to Window > Asset Manager, and click Import. Choose one or more supported image files; after upload, Roblox moderation must approve them before players can see or interact with them in a published game.
Studio supports PNG, JPG, GIF, TGA, and BMP images. You can use Asset Manager for a game, the Studio Importer for a broader import workflow, legacy Bulk Import for a batch, or Open Cloud for automated uploads.
Before you upload
Save the image on your computer in a supported format:
- PNG
- JPG or JPEG
- GIF
- TGA
- BMP
PNG is often useful for transparent graphics, while JPG is suitable for photographs without transparency. These formats are supported by Roblox Studio’s Asset Manager and Studio Importer; Open Cloud has a different supported-format list.

Imported assets are private by default. Uploading an image does not automatically publish it to the Creator Store or make it available to every Roblox user.
Method 1: Upload an image with Asset Manager
Use this method to import one or more images for the experience currently open in Roblox Studio.
- Open your experience in Roblox Studio.
- Select Window > Asset Manager. You may also be able to open Asset Manager from the Home tab.
- Click Import.
- Select one or more supported image files from your computer.
- Confirm the import and wait for Studio to add the files to the asset list.
Roblox sends uploaded assets through moderation. After approval, the asset is added to the inventory of the user or group that owns the game.
Use the uploaded image on a part
Drag the image from Asset Manager onto a valid parent object, such as a BasePart. Studio creates a Decal inside the part and sets its ColorMapContent to the image asset.

Use the image in a user interface
Asset Manager does not automatically create an ImageLabel when you upload or drag an image. Create the UI object separately:
- In Explorer, add an ImageLabel or ImageButton to a suitable ScreenGui.
- Copy the image’s asset ID from Asset Manager.
- Select the UI object and paste the ID into its Image property.
The property typically uses a reference such as rbxassetid://1234567890. The number here is an example; use the ID copied from your asset.

How to copy an image asset ID
In the revamped Asset Manager, right-click the image and select Copy Asset ID. Paste the copied ID into a decal, an image UI object’s Image property, or a script.
rbxgameasset:// versus rbxassetid://
You can also reference an Asset Manager image by its name with a game-specific reference such as rbxgameasset://Images/Potion. Here, Images is the Asset Manager folder and Potion is the filename without its extension.
rbxgameasset:// works only in the current game. If you copy an object using that reference to another experience, the image may fail to load or resolve to a different asset with the same name. Use rbxassetid:// for cross-game references.
Method 2: Import an image with the Studio Importer
The Studio Importer handles images as well as meshes, audio, and video.
- Open your experience in Studio.
- Select File > Import.
- Choose your image file.
- Review the available import settings.
- Check any warnings and errors shown by the importer.
- Click Import.
The Studio Importer supports PNG, JPG, GIF, TGA, and BMP images. Roblox documentation describes Bulk Import as a legacy workflow and says the latest Asset Manager version uses the Studio Importer.

Roblox documents Bulk Import as a legacy workflow that remains available in the current Asset Manager. Roblox’s Asset Manager documentation says it can import up to 50 files in one batch.
- Open Window > Asset Manager.
- Open the bulk-import option available in your Asset Manager version.
- Select up to 50 image files.
- Start the import and review any warnings.
- Wait for Roblox to process the batch.
Files imported through this legacy workflow initially appear only to you in their asset folder and in Toolbox > Inventory. They still need to pass moderation before other players can see or interact with them in a published game.

For a new project, use the regular Import button or Studio Importer unless you specifically need the older batch workflow.
Enable the revamped Asset Manager
Roblox documents the revamped Asset Manager as a beta feature. To enable it:
- Select File > Beta Features.
- Enable Revamped Asset Manager.
- Restart Studio if prompted.
The revamped manager can show assets from the open experience, places in the experience, your inventory, and group inventories. Labels and layout may change as the beta interface is updated.
Moderation: why the image is not visible to players
Uploading is not the same as approval. Roblox says moderation generally occurs within a few hours after import, but approval is not guaranteed and there is no fixed completion time.
An image may appear in your Asset Manager or Toolbox inventory while remaining unavailable to other users. If you publish the game before approval, players cannot see or interact with the image until Roblox approves it. If moderation fails, Roblox sends a notification explaining why the asset cannot remain on the platform in its current form.
Manage uploaded images in Creator Dashboard
Roblox documents asset management under Creator Dashboard > Creations > Development Items. To find an asset ID:
- Open Creator Dashboard and select Creations.
- Choose Development Items.
- Select the relevant asset category.
- Hover over the image thumbnail and click ⋯.
- Choose Copy Asset ID.
The same menu may include Archive. Archiving is not a hide option: Roblox says an archived asset disappears from the website and is no longer usable or visible in Roblox games, including games owned by you.

Upload images through the Open Cloud API
For a build pipeline or automated asset process, Roblox provides the Open Cloud Assets API. This is separate from Studio’s graphical upload tools.
The documented create-asset endpoint is POST https://apis.roblox.com/assets/v1/assets. It requires an x-api-key header and multipart form data containing the asset type, display name, description, creator information, file path, and content type. Use the exact field names and request structure in Roblox’s current Open Cloud documentation, since the endpoints are subject to change.
For API image uploads, Roblox documents PNG, JPEG, BMP, and TGA formats. Files must be smaller than 8000 × 8000 pixels and can be up to 20 MB; the documented create workflow uploads one asset per request. GIF is supported by Studio, but is not listed for this Open Cloud Image/Decal upload type.

A successful request returns an operation path such as operations/{operationId}. Check the operation status using the endpoint documented by Roblox. Keep API keys out of published games, LocalScripts, public repositories, and client-side code. Roblox says image-content updates are not available through the documented update workflow, and the update endpoints are beta.
Common upload problems and fixes

Are uploaded Roblox images public automatically?
