To upload an image to ChatGPT, click or tap the + in the prompt area and choose Add photos & files. You can also drag an image into the text box or paste one copied to your clipboard. Use a PNG, JPEG, or non-animated GIF no larger than 20 MB, then ask a clear question about what you want ChatGPT to inspect.
How to attach an image to a ChatGPT conversation
- Open the ChatGPT conversation where you want to use the image.
- In the prompt area, click or tap the + icon, then select Add photos & files.
- Choose the image from your device. Alternatively, drag an image file into the text area or paste an image copied to your clipboard.
- Write a direct prompt about the image, such as asking what an object is, what a document says, or what is shown in a particular area. Send the message with the image attached.
Image inputs are available on Free and paid plans, subject to plan-specific usage limits and account settings. Availability can also depend on your platform and account. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ.
Supported image formats and size limits
OpenAI’s Image Inputs FAQ lists these supported still-image formats and the per-image size limit:
| Image type | Supported formats | Maximum size |
|---|---|---|
| Still image | PNG (.png), JPEG (.jpeg or .jpg), non-animated GIF (.gif) | 20 MB per image |
Do not assume that other formats or animated GIFs are supported. The 20 MB limit applies to each image. OpenAI does not specify a fixed number of images that every user can attach in one message; the number depends on image size and the accompanying text.

Fix an image that will not attach
- Check the format: Use PNG, JPEG, or a non-animated GIF.
- Check the file size: Make sure the image is no larger than 20 MB. If it is, save or export a smaller copy.
- Try another attachment method: Use the plus menu, drag and drop, or clipboard paste.
- Reduce the batch: If you are attaching several images, try fewer at once or use smaller files. The number accepted varies with image size and accompanying text.
What to do when ChatGPT says “Upload limit reached”
An upload-limit message can result from a rolling upload-rate limit or a shared storage cap. As currently documented by OpenAI in 2026, the example limits are up to 80 file uploads every 3 hours and 3 uploads per day for Free users. OpenAI says limits may be lowered during peak hours. Shared storage is listed as 25 GB per user and 100 GB per organization. These quotas can change; check OpenAI’s current file upload guidance for the latest figures.
- Confirm the account and plan: Check that you are signed in to the account you intend to use.
- Check storage: Open Settings > Storage to inspect Library storage. OpenAI says ChatGPT does not show how much rolling upload-rate quota remains.
- Consider recent attempts: Failed upload attempts can sometimes count toward the rate limit, so repeated retries may not help.
- Check service status: Look for an OpenAI service incident if the upload problem is unexpected.
- Contact support if needed: OpenAI asks users reporting upload issues to provide their account email, a screenshot, the timestamp and time zone, platform or browser, and a request ID if available.
Fix an image that uploads but is misread
A completed upload does not guarantee that ChatGPT will interpret the image correctly. OpenAI notes that unclear images can lead to less accurate interpretations. Small text, rotated images, non-Latin text, graph lines distinguished mainly by color or style, precise spatial questions, panoramic or fisheye images, and object counting can be challenging. Images are resized before analysis, and ChatGPT does not process original filenames or metadata.

- Enlarge small text while keeping enough of the surrounding context in frame.
- Ask about a specific area or detail, and describe where it is in the image.
- For a chart, identify the line or region you want interpreted rather than relying only on its visual position.
- If the image is unclear or distorted, provide a clearer, more focused image when possible.
These steps can improve legibility but cannot guarantee a correct reading. OpenAI also says ChatGPT is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images such as CT scans and should not be used for medical advice.

Attaching a picture directly is not the same as uploading a document that contains the picture. OpenAI’s current file guidance says visual retrieval for PDFs is supported on Enterprise; on other plans, and for other document types, retrieval is text-based and extracts digital text rather than embedded images. If you need ChatGPT to analyze a picture inside a document, attach the image itself instead of relying on the document upload.
