Windows 11 Home can be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro without reinstalling Windows or deleting your files. The supported routes are to buy Pro through Microsoft Store, enter a valid 25-character Pro product key, or use a Pro digital license already associated with the device.
Before starting, confirm that Windows 11 Home is activated. Microsoft’s manual upgrade path is intended for an activated copy of Windows 11 Home.
What you need before upgrading
- An activated installation of Windows 11 Home
- A Microsoft account and payment method if you are buying Pro through Microsoft Store
- Or a valid Windows 11 Pro product key
- Internet access for the purchase, licensing, and activation steps
Save your work before beginning. The upgrade normally preserves your files, applications, and settings, but the computer may restart and be unavailable while Windows changes editions.
Check your edition and activation status
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Check the edition shown beside the Windows logo. It should say Windows 11 Home.
- Check Activation state. It should show that Windows is activated.
To check the exact Windows version and build, search for winver in the taskbar search box and open the matching result.

If the device is not activated, activate Windows before attempting the edition upgrade. If the edition already says Pro, there is no Home-to-Pro upgrade to perform; investigate activation instead.
Method 1: Upgrade through Microsoft Store
This is Microsoft’s preferred method because Store checks the installed edition and activation state and guides you through the purchase.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Expand Upgrade your edition of Windows.
- Next to Upgrade in the Microsoft app, select Open Store.
- In Microsoft Store, review the Windows 11 Pro offer and select the purchase option.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want associated with the purchase.
- Complete the payment and purchase process.
- When Windows prompts you to install Windows 11 Pro, accept the prompt and restart the device when requested.
After the restart, return to Settings > System > Activation. The edition should show Windows 11 Pro and the activation state should confirm that Windows is activated.
If “Upgrade your edition of Windows” is missing
The device may already be running Pro, or the edition upgrade may not be available for that installation. Check the edition at the top of the Activation page and run winver to confirm the installed Windows version.

- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC WITH NO PRIOR VERSION of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE PRODUCT SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
Method 2: Use an existing Windows 11 Pro product key
Use this route if you already bought a retail Pro key, received one with a qualifying license, or have another legitimate 25-character Windows 11 Pro key. The key must match the installed Windows version and target edition. An Enterprise key cannot activate Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro.
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Find Change product key and select Change.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt by selecting Yes or supplying administrator credentials.
- Enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro product key in the Change Product Key window.
- Select Next and follow the prompts to begin the edition upgrade.
Windows may restart during the process. Once it has finished, check Settings > System > Activation again to verify both the edition and activation state.
Method 3: Use a Pro digital license already linked to the device
If the computer has a Windows 11 Pro digital license but currently has Windows 11 Home installed, you may not need to buy another key. Use the Windows Activation troubleshooter:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- If the troubleshooter identifies a Pro license, select Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro.
- Select Start upgrade.
Close applications and save all work before selecting Start upgrade. The upgrade can take time, and the computer cannot be used while it runs.

Windows 11 Home in S mode
Windows 11 in S mode is available only in the Home edition. If the device is in S mode, do not use the normal Upgrade your edition of Windows link when your goal is to switch to Pro. That route is separate and can leave the device in S mode.
Use this path instead:
Settings > System > Activation > Switch to Windows 11 Pro > Go to the Store > Get
Switching out of S mode is free and permanent. It cannot be reversed. On an organization-managed computer, an administrator may need to allow the switch.
Common activation errors
If the upgrade fails, the error code usually indicates whether the problem is the key, the network, or the licensing service.

What to do after a hardware change
A motherboard replacement or other significant hardware change can stop Windows from finding a digital license. Open Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot and select the hardware-change reactivation option if it appears.
For this option, the Microsoft account must have been associated with the digital license before the hardware change. If the upgrade used a product key, Microsoft may require that same key again. The Windows edition must remain the same before and after the hardware change.

Publicly posted “generic Pro keys” are often described as a way to convert Home to Pro and activate it. They do not provide a valid Windows 11 Pro license. Microsoft’s supported options are a Microsoft Store purchase, a valid Pro product key, or an eligible Pro digital license.
Also be cautious with a “Your Windows License Will Expire Soon” message. It can indicate that a volume-license client is installed. Volume activation is commonly controlled by an organization, so contact the system administrator rather than buying a random key.

FAQ
Can I upgrade Windows 11 Home to Pro without reinstalling Windows?
Yes. Use Microsoft Store, enter a valid Windows 11 Pro product key under Settings > System > Activation, or use the Activation troubleshooter if a Pro digital license is already associated with the device.
Will upgrading to Windows 11 Pro delete my files?
The supported edition upgrade is designed to preserve your files, apps, and settings. Save your work and back up important data before starting because Windows may restart and the device will be unavailable during the upgrade.
Do I need a new product key to upgrade?
Not always. You can buy Pro through Microsoft Store or use a valid Pro product key. If the device already has a Pro digital license, the Activation troubleshooter may offer the upgrade without another purchase.
Can I use a Windows 10 Pro key for Windows 11 Home?
Microsoft’s current upgrade instructions call for a valid Windows 11 Pro product key or a qualifying Pro digital license. The key must match the installed Windows version and edition; an Enterprise key is not suitable.

The Microsoft Store price can change by region and over time. Check the current price in the Store from Settings > System > Activation rather than relying on an old listing.
Can I return to Windows 11 Home after upgrading?
An edition upgrade is not a normal temporary mode switch. Returning to Home generally requires reinstalling Windows 11 Home, so confirm that Pro features are worth the upgrade before proceeding.
The Bottom Line
For most users, the cleanest route is Settings > System > Activation > Upgrade your edition of Windows > Open Store. Use Change product key if you already own a legitimate Windows 11 Pro key, or run the Activation troubleshooter if Pro is already licensed to the device. Check the edition and activation state again after the restart.
