A 1TB M.2 2230 NVMe SSD such as the Crucial P310 is a possible internal upgrade for handhelds that accept that exact drive size—but it is not a universal fit. Check your device’s model and SSD form factor before buying. The headline’s $0.13 per GB works out to about $130 per 1TB using decimal capacity; the available price evidence is historical, not a verified current offer.

Choose between an internal SSD and microSD expansion

There are two distinct ways to add storage, and they involve different trade-offs:

  • Replace the internal SSD: This may provide more integrated storage, but requires a drive that matches the device’s form factor and a hardware replacement procedure.
  • Add a microSD card: This is a removable expansion option that avoids replacing the internal drive, if your handheld has a card slot. Valve lists microSD support for Steam Deck, and ASUS lists a microSD reader for its ROG Ally family. Valve’s Steam Deck specifications and ASUS’s ROG Ally specifications document those features.

The specifications cited here do not establish a controlled comparison of game-loading performance between microSD and internal SSD storage, so they do not support a universal speed or value verdict.

Check the exact model and SSD size before buying

“Handheld gaming PC” does not tell you which internal SSD will fit. The Crucial P310 2230 is a candidate for compatible devices such as Steam Deck models, but the ROG Ally X (2024) uses an M.2 2280 drive. Those lengths are different, so do not assume a 2230 drive fits an Ally X because another Ally model may accept a different configuration.

Valve’s Steam Deck tech sheet lists socketed M.2 2230 modules, while also cautioning that they are not intended for end-user replacement. That is an important distinction: a drive can match the listed size without the manufacturer recommending that owners replace it themselves. Check Valve’s Steam Deck technical specifications for the storage details and caution. For an Ally X (2024), ASUS lists an M.2 2280 SSD.

For newer devices, check the exact product specification rather than relying on the family name. Xbox Wire’s 2025 announcement for ROG Xbox Ally devices describes 512GB and 1TB M.2 2280 options and a UHS-II microSD reader. Read the Xbox Wire announcement for the models it covers.

What the Crucial P310 2230 offers

If your handheld accepts an M.2 2230 NVMe SSD and you are considering an internal replacement, the Crucial P310 1TB (product code CT1000P310SSD2) is one example. Crucial/Micron lists it in the 2230 form factor and identifies compatible handheld examples including Steam Deck and ASUS ROG Ally. The P310 2230 product flyer lists a 1TB option and the manufacturer’s product details; Micron’s launch announcement also names handheld compatibility.

Micron rates the P310 2230 for sequential reads of up to 7,100 MB/s and sequential writes of up to 6,000 MB/s. These are manufacturer-rated maximums, not measured game-loading results on a handheld. They should not be read as a promise that games will load at those speeds.

Understand the $0.13-per-GB price claim

At decimal capacity, $0.13 multiplied by 1,000GB is about $130 for a 1TB drive. That arithmetic does not establish the current price of the Crucial P310 or any other SSD. Tom’s Hardware recorded a $114.99 MSRP for the P310 1TB in 2024; Windows Central later reported a temporary $84.99 Amazon deal in December 2025. Both are historical figures, not current offers. Tom’s Hardware’s 2024 review and Windows Central’s December 2025 deal report provide that dated context.

When comparing options, use the price available to you and the usable capacity shown for the exact product. A historical MSRP or promotion cannot tell you today’s cost per gigabyte.

Plan an internal replacement carefully

An internal SSD upgrade involves more than buying the right capacity. Confirm the exact drive length and interface for your model, then assess whether you are comfortable following a hardware-replacement procedure. Valve’s warning that Steam Deck’s socketed modules are not intended for end-user replacement makes that consideration especially relevant to Deck owners.

Crucial’s handheld-console installation guide describes an SSD replacement workflow. It is a procedural reference, not evidence that the job is easy or appropriate for every owner or every handheld. If you prefer not to open the device, use the microSD expansion route where the manufacturer lists a compatible card slot.
