Then tailor your resume to the roles you want, revise your LinkedIn headline and summary to reflect your current status, and choose an Open to Work visibility setting that fits your comfort with publicity. You do not need to label the departure as a layoff on your resume.
How to update your resume and LinkedIn after a layoff
Work through the updates in this order: make your employment history accurate, focus the resume on the next role, revise LinkedIn, and then check that the documents agree. That keeps your status truthful without making the layoff the focus of your applications.
1. Correct your employment dates
On your resume, change the former position’s end date to the month and year your employment ended. Do not leave the role marked as current. LinkedIn likewise advises members to turn off “I currently work here” and enter an end date when a job has ended; see LinkedIn Help: Update your profile to reflect a career break or unemployment. CareerOneStop also recommends using truthful employment dates in its Resume Guide.
Use the same dates on your resume, LinkedIn, and application forms. If an application asks why you left, answer accurately and briefly. The resume itself generally does not need to explain the layoff.

2. Focus the resume on relevant evidence
Keep accomplishments, skills, and experience that support the roles you are pursuing. For each application, adjust the emphasis and use accurate terms from the job description where they match your background. UC Davis Career Center recommends tailoring resume content and incorporating relevant job-description language in its resume guidance.
Some applicant tracking systems can search for keywords associated with role requirements, but systems vary. The U.S. Department of Labor’s VETS guide describes keyword searching as one possible ATS function; it is not a reason to stuff a resume with terms that do not describe your experience. Use a clear layout so both a person and any application system can follow your experience, accomplishments, and dates.

Keep a strong base resume, then save a tailored copy for each target role. That makes it easier to adjust relevant evidence without losing the accurate, complete version of your work history.
3. Decide whether to explain the layoff
Usually, do not add “laid off” beside the job title or in a resume bullet. The resume’s job is to show what you did and why it fits the opening. If context would help, explain the departure briefly in a cover letter or interview—for example, that the role ended in a company restructuring—then return to your qualifications. CareerOneStop’s resume guidance emphasizes presenting relevant qualifications rather than treating a layoff as a resume entry.

How to update LinkedIn after your job ends
End the former position in Experience
Edit the former role in the Experience section and enter its end date. LinkedIn’s guidance on unemployment says to update the prior position’s end date; it also says Experience is not the place to announce that you are unemployed. See LinkedIn Help.
Revise your headline and summary
Use the headline to say what kind of work you do or want to do, and use the summary to give a concise account of your experience, strengths, and direction. If you want your status to be explicit, LinkedIn says a headline can identify a professional status “for example if you’re unemployed or retired”; see LinkedIn Help: Edit Your Headline. You can also make the target role or specialty more prominent without describing yourself primarily by the layoff.

LinkedIn identifies the headline, current position, and “Open to finding a new job” setting as profile introduction fields. It says, “Your network won’t be notified when you make changes to the introduction section on your profile,” in Edit the Introduction section on your profile. That notification guidance concerns introduction changes; it does not mean every LinkedIn edit is invisible to others.

Recruiter-only visibility avoids the public profile photo frame, but it is not a privacy guarantee. LinkedIn says it takes steps to prevent recruiters at your current company from seeing recruiter-only career interests, then cautions: “We can’t guarantee complete privacy.” Read LinkedIn Help: Let recruiters know you’re Open to Work before deciding whether that setting is appropriate for you.
Keep resumes consistent across applications
Use your tailored resume for each role, while ensuring that job titles, dates, and core facts remain consistent with LinkedIn and application forms. LinkedIn’s job-search guide says members can upload a default resume and save up to four additional versions for LinkedIn-hosted applications. These saved copies can help you manage variants, but check the file and selected version when applying. See LinkedIn’s job-search guide.
Final check before you apply
- The former role has an accurate end date everywhere, and is not described as current.
- The resume highlights achievements and skills relevant to the particular opening.
- Any layoff explanation is brief and placed only where it helps answer a question.
- Your LinkedIn Experience, headline, and summary accurately represent your status and direction.
- You have chosen an Open to Work audience with a clear understanding of its privacy limits.
- The resume attached to an application is the tailored version you intended to send.
