To update an Xbox controller on a console, press the Xbox button and go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories. Select the controller, open its options, and follow the prompts if an update is available. On a Windows PC, use the Xbox Accessories app with a USB cable or Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows; the app does not support updating over Bluetooth.
Update the controller from an Xbox console
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Accessories.
- Select the controller. Open its options (shown as an ellipsis in Microsoft’s video) to check its firmware status.
- If the console offers an update, follow the on-screen prompts. If it reports that no update is available, Microsoft’s troubleshooting video treats the controller as up to date.
Menu wording can change; look for the controller’s Accessories screen and its firmware or update options. These steps are documented in Microsoft’s controller troubleshooting video, published February 23, 2021.
Update the controller from a Windows PC
- Open or install the Xbox Accessories app.
- Connect the controller to the PC using a USB cable or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
- If the app reports that an update is required, follow its prompts to install it.
Bluetooth is not a supported connection method for updating through the PC app, according to this Microsoft Community answer. Use a wired or Xbox Wireless Adapter connection instead.
If the firmware update fails or appears stuck
Try these steps in order. Microsoft’s video gives a five-minute wait as a troubleshooting step for the scenario it describes; it does not establish a universal update duration or guarantee that every stalled update will recover.

- Disconnect controller accessories and retry. Remove attached accessories, then check for the update again in the console’s Accessories screen.
- Power cycle the console. Hold the console’s Xbox button for 10 seconds until it shuts down. Restart it, return to Accessories, and retry.
- Check the wired connection. Make sure the USB cable is firmly connected to both the console and controller. A controller may have a micro-USB or USB-C port, so use a cable that fits its port.
- Try another cable. If the update still fails, replace the cable and retry. Microsoft recommends trying a different USB cable; it does not specify or endorse a particular brand or model.
- Leave it connected. Keep the controller connected by USB for up to five minutes to allow a background update to finish. If it remains stuck, do not assume that waiting longer will resolve it.
- Try the Windows route. If the console method continues to fail, use the Xbox Accessories app with USB or an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows.
The retry steps and cable guidance come from Microsoft’s troubleshooting video.
Controller firmware and console updates are different
Use the controller’s Accessories screen to check controller firmware. An Xbox One console operating-system update is a separate process: Microsoft lists it under Settings > System > Updates & downloads > Update console in its Xbox One system update instructions. Updating the console is not the same as updating the controller.
