Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For most sites, the safest update path is to make a restorable backup of both WordPress files and the database, test higher-risk changes on staging, update through the dashboard, then check the site’s key functions. If an update breaks something, diagnose it where possible; to return to the earlier site state, restore the matching files-and-database backup set.
Before updating: prepare a reliable recovery path
Back up files and the database together
A typical WordPress site needs both its files and its database for a full restore. WordPress’s Backups – Advanced Administration Handbook explains that one without the other is not a complete recovery point. Keep the two components together and note when they were created so you can restore a matched set.
Make sure you know how to access the backup and restore it before you start. A backup that cannot be retrieved or restored is not a practical rollback plan. Keep an additional copy somewhere separate from the live hosting account when possible.
Decide whether to use staging
Staging is a copy of your site used to test changes before applying them to production. It is especially useful for business-critical sites, sites with custom code, or updates where a compatibility problem could disrupt important work. Make the staging environment reasonably close to production, including its PHP version and configuration, so tests are meaningful.

Staging is not automatically a current backup of the live site. It may contain older content, and testing changes there does not protect production unless you also have a restorable backup of production.
Review what is about to change
In the WordPress dashboard, check which core, plugin, and theme updates are available. Review plugin details and compatibility information when provided. WordPress notes that compatibility may be unknown when a plugin has not been updated since the latest core release; an unknown status is not proof that an update will fail, but it is a reason to be cautious.

Update WordPress core, plugins, and themes
WordPress core: use the dashboard for the ordinary path
- Sign in to the WordPress admin dashboard.
- Open Dashboard > Updates.
- Review available updates, then follow the one-click update prompts.
- Wait for the process to finish before navigating away, and then verify the site.
WordPress says one-click updates work for most sites. Its Updating WordPress guide recommends backing up first. Manual updates are available if the one-click process fails or a hands-on route is necessary, but replacing core files manually is more error-prone. Core-file customizations can be overwritten, so preserve custom work and take care not to replace wp-content unintentionally. If you are unsure, ask your host or a WordPress professional for help.
Plugins and themes: keep backups and monitor automatic updates
Update plugins and themes with a current backup available. WordPress allows plugin and theme auto-updates, but a scheduled update is not a guarantee that the update completed successfully. The schedule relies on WordPress Cron, which may not work correctly in every environment. Check dashboard notices or other update notifications and investigate failures rather than assuming all scheduled updates ran.
Recommended Free Tools
For a high-impact plugin or theme, test the change on staging first. This is particularly valuable when the component affects checkout, forms, login, publishing, or custom functionality. The appropriate level of testing depends on what the site does and what a failure would cost.
When PHP needs an update
PHP is configured at the server level, so changing it is different from updating WordPress core, a plugin, or a theme. Before asking your host to change PHP, back up the site, update WordPress and its themes and plugins, and check that the site’s components support the PHP version your host plans to use. Coordinate the change with the hosting provider; WordPress’s PHP guidance directs users to their host for server-level changes and recovery help. Check current WordPress, plugin, theme, host, and PHP project requirements rather than relying on an old version recommendation.

Verify the site after updating
Check the front end and admin
Open the site in a browser and check the WordPress admin area. Look for visible errors, broken layouts, or features that no longer behave as expected. Then test actions that matter for your particular site:
- Sign in and use the roles or admin functions you rely on.
- Submit important forms and confirm they reach the expected destination.
- Create or edit a post if publishing is a key workflow.
- For an online store, test the checkout path using an appropriate safe method.
- Check any custom integrations or features affected by the update.
Review Site Health
Open Tools > Site Health to review critical configuration issues and system details. Site Health is a diagnostic aid, not a substitute for testing the real tasks visitors and administrators need to complete.

Use Recovery Mode for troubleshooting when available
A fatal PHP error may trigger a WordPress Recovery Mode email. If you receive one, its safe admin session can help you investigate the plugin, theme, or custom code identified in the notice. Recovery Mode is a troubleshooting tool; it does not restore the entire site to an earlier state.
If the site remains accessible, diagnose the problem before restoring everything. A specific plugin or theme may be responsible, and fixing or disabling that component may be preferable to rolling back the whole site.
Restore the matched backup set when rollback is needed
- Use the backup set created before the update, with its files and database from the same point in time.
- Restore the files first, then restore or import the database, following WordPress’s documented restore order.
- Check configuration, including database credentials, if those details have changed.
- Open the site and test the important functions again.
WordPress’s update guide says a failed upgrade can be handled by restoring the backup and replacing files with the previous version from the release archive. If you do not know how to use your host’s restore tools or the backup process, ask the host or a WordPress professional rather than improvising on the live site.
Choosing a staging approach
Staging can be provided by a host, a plugin, or a manual copy. The right option depends on how it handles the site and how comfortable you are managing the process. Before choosing, check:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Whether both files and the database are copied.
- How closely the staging runtime, PHP version, and configuration match production.
- Whether updates can be tested without changing the live site.
- Whether changes can be pushed selectively, and whether that process could overwrite newer live data.
- How backups and restores work if the test or deployment goes wrong.
- What operator skill is needed and what support the host provides.
The WP STAGING listing on WordPress.org describes cloning, staging, backup, and restore functions for that plugin. Those are the author’s product descriptions, not independent test results; assess the workflow and restore options for your own site before relying on any tool.
