First, check the exact motherboard model and hardware revision against its official Ryzen 5 9600X CPU support list. There is no single BIOS version that works for every AM5 motherboard: use the version and update method specified for your particular board. If the board cannot boot with the 9600X, CPU-less USB BIOS Flashback is an option only if that exact model supports it.
Before you begin: identify the motherboard
The Ryzen 5 9600X is an AM5 Ryzen 9000 desktop processor. AMD lists it with 6 cores, 12 threads, a 65 W TDP and up to 5.4 GHz max boost in its March 2025 Ryzen 9000 quick reference guide. Those specifications do not determine which BIOS version your motherboard needs.
Read the complete motherboard model name and hardware revision printed on the board or its box. Then open that exact model and revision’s support page on the motherboard manufacturer’s website. AMD’s product-specific guidance is to contact the OEM for the appropriate BIOS update; use the motherboard maker’s download page, not a third-party firmware site or a file selected only because it matches the chipset. Check whether a BIOS update is required
- Open the official CPU support list. Find Ryzen 5 9600X under the exact motherboard model and revision.
- Note the minimum BIOS version. If the list gives a minimum version for the 9600X, compare it with the BIOS currently installed. If the board already has that version or a later compatible version, an update may not be necessary.
- Read the matching BIOS notes and manual. Check for required intermediate versions, prerequisites, warnings, and the manufacturer’s recommended update method. Do not assume instructions for another motherboard—even one with the same chipset—apply to yours.
If the CPU support list or BIOS notes do not clearly establish compatibility, check with the motherboard manufacturer’s support channel before proceeding. A chipset name alone cannot confirm support or identify a minimum BIOS version.

Choose the update method for your situation
| Situation | What to do |

USB BIOS Flashback can allow firmware updating without a compatible processor installed, but it is not a feature of every AM5 board. AMD has described Flashback as an option when a processor is not compatible with the current BIOS in a Ryzen 5000 preparation post; that general concept does not specify a 9600X procedure. The exact motherboard manual controls.
Update the BIOS using the board’s instructions
- Download the BIOS from the exact board support page. Verify the model and revision before downloading. Read the release notes and any prerequisite instructions before starting.
- Prepare the update file as directed. The required file name, USB drive format, capacity, and folder location vary by manufacturer and method. Use a USB drive only if the documented procedure calls for one.
- Follow the specified utility or Flashback steps. For an in-UEFI update, use the board’s named firmware utility. For CPU-less Flashback, use only the designated USB port and button sequence documented for the board.
- Keep power stable while firmware is being written. Do not turn off or reset the system while the board indicates that the update is in progress. Follow the manual for the board’s completion indicator and first-boot instructions.
- After the update completes, follow the manufacturer’s first-boot guidance. If the manual directs you to load BIOS defaults or perform another setup step, do so before shutting down to install the processor.
Install the Ryzen 5 9600X after the update
Once the motherboard indicates that the BIOS update completed successfully, shut the system down and install the 9600X according to the motherboard and processor manuals. Do not remove or install the CPU while the board is powered. Use the board’s instructions for the first startup after the processor change.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a BIOS by chipset alone: different boards—and hardware revisions of the same product—can have different files and instructions.
- Assuming every AM5 board supports CPU-less Flashback: verify the feature in the exact model’s manual before relying on it.
- Renaming or formatting files by guesswork: use only the filename and drive-preparation steps specified by the manufacturer.
- Interrupting an update: wait for the board’s documented completion indication before powering down or restarting.
- Using a third-party BIOS file: obtain firmware from the motherboard manufacturer’s official support page.
