To update router firmware safely, identify the exact model and hardware revision, use the manufacturer’s or ISP’s supported update method, and let the router finish restarting without interruption. If its manufacturer or ISP confirms that security updates have ended, replace it: a factory reset cannot restore patch support.

Before you update: identify the exact router

  1. Read the label on the router or check its administration screen. Record the brand, full model number, and hardware revision. If the router came from your internet provider, note the provider too and ask whether it manages firmware updates automatically.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s official support page for that exact model and the region where the router was sold. Check the listed firmware version, release notes, and support status. Similar-looking models can require different firmware.
  3. Use only an update file or process from the manufacturer or ISP. NIST’s September 2024 guidance for consumer-grade routers recommends authenticated, authorized update mechanisms and packages signed by their source, typically the manufacturer.

Do not install a file intended for another model, hardware revision, or region. Avoid third-party firmware unless you have separately verified that the project supports your exact device and understand the associated risks.

How to install a router firmware update

Menu names and available methods vary by model. Follow the official instructions for your router rather than assuming every router uses the same buttons or screens.

Use the router’s app or administration page

  1. Save a configuration backup first if the router offers that option. Check the release notes for warnings that settings may reset, and follow the manufacturer’s directions.
  2. Open the router’s official app or its web administration page and use the documented firmware-update option. For example, NETGEAR documents updating through its Nighthawk app or a web admin page; TP-Link documents cloud and manual update routes.
  3. Start the update and leave the router powered on. Keep the required network connection stable, do not close or interrupt the update operation, and wait for the router to restart fully. NETGEAR’s update instructions and TP-Link’s firmware guidance both warn against interruption.
  4. When the router is back online, check its administration interface for the reported firmware version. Test internet access and confirm that important devices can reconnect.

Install a downloaded file when the official instructions require it

  1. Download the firmware only from the official support page for the exact model, hardware revision, and purchase region. Recheck those details against the file before installing it.
  2. If possible, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet. Back up the router configuration if supported and review the release notes before proceeding.
  3. Use the model-specific instructions to upload and install the file. Keep power and the connection stable; do not switch off the router or interrupt the process. Wait for the complete reboot before checking the firmware version and testing the network.

If the update fails or the router does not return to normal, use the manufacturer’s recovery instructions or contact the ISP if it supplied the device. Do not repeatedly try files for similar models. Restore a configuration backup only as the manufacturer directs and only if it is compatible with the updated firmware.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

How to tell whether a router is end of life

End of life is a support status, not a fixed age. A slow or unreliable router may have a performance problem, but that alone does not establish that security support has ended. Check the support page for the exact model, and ask the manufacturer or ISP if its status is unclear.

The key question is whether supported security firmware updates are still provided. The FBI explains that end-of-life routers no longer receive software updates or security patches and recommends replacement where possible in its 2025 alert on criminal proxy services exploiting end-of-life routers. Australian government router security guidance likewise treats replacing an end-of-life router as a priority. A factory reset can erase settings, but it does not restart manufacturer support or provide missing security patches.

When to replace the router—and what to check

Replace the router if the manufacturer or ISP confirms that security support has ended, or its official support information shows no further supported security firmware. Before choosing a replacement, check the practical and security requirements that matter for your home:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Update support: Look for a published support period or end date for the exact model, and confirm that security updates are provided.
  • Update delivery: Prefer automatic updates or clear notifications that help you keep firmware current. NIST’s consumer-router recommendations describe mechanisms such as automatic application or consistent notification.
  • ISP and home compatibility: Confirm with your provider that the router works with your service and any required modem or optical network terminal (ONT). Match coverage and wired-port needs to your home.
  • Wi-Fi security: The FTC recommends WPA3 or WPA2 and says to consider replacing a router if it still cannot provide either after a software update. Its home Wi-Fi security guidance also advises checking with the manufacturer and ISP about updates.
  • Migration: Before retiring the old router, record or back up useful settings when safe to do so. Plan to recreate the Wi-Fi name and password and reconnect household devices on the replacement.

There is no universal router lifespan established by these sources, so use the model’s support status rather than purchase age as the security test. FTC staff reported in November 2024 that 161 connected products in its survey lacked information about software-update support duration or end date on manufacturer product webpages. That finding covered connected products generally, not routers alone, so it is not a router-specific rate.
