To receive Office updates through Windows Update, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows in Windows Update’s advanced options. You can also check for Office updates directly from a Windows Office app using File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
Turn on Microsoft product updates in Windows 11

Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.

Select Advanced options.

Turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.

Return to Windows Update and check for updates when appropriate. Some updates may require a restart to finish installing; see Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.

Microsoft describes this setting as a way to receive Office updates through Microsoft Update. It is an update-delivery option for eligible Microsoft products, not a guarantee that every Microsoft application, update channel, or update type will be delivered through Windows Update. Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Under Update options, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.

Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Turning on this option does not restore Windows support. Check Microsoft’s Windows hardware-driver guidance for that lifecycle notice and for the separate distinction between recommended and optional drivers. Optional driver updates require you to select them; they are not Office updates.
Check for Office updates from an Office app

Open Word or another Microsoft 365 or Office app.

Select File > Account. In classic Outlook, select Office Account.

Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
Microsoft documents this direct check for Windows installations in its Office update instructions. If Update Options is missing, the installation may use a volume license or updates may be managed by your organization.

What to do if the setting or update control is missing

On a work or school PC: Your organization may manage Microsoft 365 Apps updates through Group Policy or Cloud Update. If the Windows setting or Office controls are unavailable, or Office remains out of date, contact your IT administrator or help desk rather than trying to bypass policy.

On a personal PC: If the Office app offers Update Options > Update Now, use it to check directly. Otherwise, review the Windows Update advanced options and follow Microsoft’s guidance for your version of Windows.

Do not treat a specific optional Office update as a universal fix: Microsoft’s KB5002907 page describes a conditional update for specified Microsoft 365 Apps installations and channels. It is not an operating-system update, and Microsoft says it makes no changes when updates are managed by Group Policy or Cloud Update. The page also reports a paused rollout after unexpected results on some Office 2016 and Office 2019 devices, so check its current status before considering that particular KB.
