Before installing a new PC game, identify the graphics card, download a compatible driver from its maker or your PC manufacturer, install it, restart if prompted, and confirm the installed version. A driver update is not guaranteed to improve performance or required for every game, so also check the game publisher’s system requirements.
1. Identify your graphics card and PC model
- In Windows, right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters and note the graphics adapter’s full name. If more than one adapter is listed, record each one.
- If you use a laptop or prebuilt desktop, note its exact make and model as well. The computer manufacturer may provide a customized driver package.
For Intel graphics, Intel advises checking the computer manufacturer’s support page first when customized drivers may apply. See Intel’s clean-install guidance and Intel’s Windows driver installation guidance.
2. Choose the right official driver
Use the support or download page for the GPU maker or your computer manufacturer. Select the exact GPU or PC model and your Windows version; driver availability differs by device and operating system. Avoid third-party driver download sites.
- NVIDIA: Use NVIDIA’s official driver route and choose the Game Ready driver package for your card. NVIDIA’s manual installation directions are in its support instructions.
- AMD Radeon: AMD supports automatic detection or manual product selection through its official driver download page. Its installer instructions explain both selection methods: Install AMD Radeon Software on Windows Based System.

AMD Recommended or Optional?
AMD describes Recommended releases as internally quality-assessed and WHQL-certified. Optional releases offer the latest support for new game titles and graphics products between Recommended releases. Choose according to whether you value that stated quality-assessment status or newer title support; neither channel is automatically the right choice for every player. 3. Download and install the driver
- Download the package that matches your device and Windows version from the official source you selected. Keep the downloaded file accessible.
- Save your work and close applications if the installer asks. NVIDIA notes that Windows Update activity or open applications can interfere with its manual installation procedure.
- Run the installer and follow its prompts. Use a standard installation unless the vendor’s instructions or an installation problem calls for a clean install.
When to use a clean install
A clean install removes existing driver components or files, and may reset settings; it is not a requirement for every routine update. Intel’s clean-install guidance says the process also resets Intel settings and clears the shader cache. NVIDIA and AMD also document clean-install options in their respective installer workflows. Consider one when following the vendor’s relevant procedure or troubleshooting a corrupted installation, rather than selecting it automatically. 4. Restart and verify the installed version
Restart if the installer prompts you to do so. NVIDIA’s manual clean-install instructions specifically require a reboot to finalize that procedure.

After restarting, check the driver version in the vendor’s software or Device Manager and compare it with the package you selected. For Intel graphics, compare the full seven-digit build number, not just part of the version string; Intel explains the format in Understanding the Intel Graphics Driver Version Number. AMD Radeon Settings displays the installed version and offers an update check, as described in AMD’s version and update guide. Windows Update can interfere with or revert a vendor driver in some installation scenarios, so checking the version helps confirm which driver is active.

Once the driver is installed and verified, continue with the game installation and follow the publisher’s system requirements for the specific game. Driver updates can provide support for newer titles, but the guidance cited here does not establish a universal performance gain or a requirement to update before every game.

If the new driver causes trouble, use the GPU maker’s or PC manufacturer’s supported troubleshooting or rollback guidance. Avoid repeatedly installing unrelated driver utilities, and re-check which version is active after any recovery step.
