To update a Dell docking station, first identify its exact model and your computer’s operating system, then use the matching downloads and instructions on Dell Support. Dell’s detailed Windows workflow covers WD19 and WD22-family docks; other models and operating systems can require different steps. Keep the dock connected while its firmware utility runs.
Before you start: identify the dock and computer
Find the dock’s model on its label or product page, and note your computer model and operating system. Download only software listed for that dock and host system. A package for one Dell dock is not automatically suitable for another.
This guide’s step-by-step Windows workflow is based on Dell’s instructions for WD19 and WD22-family docks. WD22TB4 also has documented Linux and ChromeOS procedures; use its full administrator guide rather than applying Windows steps to those systems.
How to update drivers and firmware on a Dell dock
- Connect the dock to the computer. Leave it connected during firmware installation so the utility can detect it.
- Download the dock firmware update. Open the dock’s product page on Dell Support and choose the firmware package listed for your exact model. For a WD19, Dell’s driver installation guide and WD19 firmware instructions describe the applicable process.
- Run the firmware utility as administrator. Let its interface load, choose Update, and wait for the component update and completion status. Do not disconnect the dock during the update.
- Update Windows and the host computer’s Dell software. Run Windows Update, then use the Dell updater suited to the computer family. Dell recommends SupportAssist for Dell systems, Dell Command Update for Precision, XPS, and Latitude, and Dell Update for Vostro, Inspiron, and G-Series. You can instead install applicable host BIOS and drivers manually from Dell Support.
- If Dell Command Update does not show dock updates, change its filter. In Dell Command Update, open Settings > Update Filter > What to display and select All updates for system model.
- Reset the dock after firmware installation. For the WD19/WD22 guide’s reset procedure, disconnect the USB-C or Thunderbolt cable from the computer and unplug the dock’s AC power. Hold the dock’s power button for 30 seconds, reconnect AC power, wait for three blinks of the power-button LED, and reconnect the computer cable.
- Test the dock. Reconnect your peripherals and check whether the original problem is resolved.
Dell’s WD19/WD22 guide recommends updating both dock software and the host computer’s BIOS, drivers, and Windows updates. Which individual dock and host packages apply depends on the models and hardware involved.

WD19 and WD22-family docks on Windows
Use the dock-specific firmware utility and Windows update workflow above. Dell’s driver guide notes that some entries are model-dependent: its Realtek USB Audio driver does not apply to WD19S, WD19TBS, WD19DCS, or WD22TB4. It also says the Intel UHD graphics driver is required even when the computer has discrete graphics. Check the guide and your computer’s support page rather than installing every listed package indiscriminately.
WD22TB4 on Linux or ChromeOS
Dell documents separate WD22TB4 procedures for these systems in the Thunderbolt Dock Administrator’s Guide. On Linux, Dell says systems with fwupd 1.2.5 or later can check for updates through LVFS using fwupdmgr or GNOME Software; the guide also describes a Dell Linux package route. For ChromeOS, Dell says WD22TB4 firmware is distributed with the latest Enterprise Chrome OS release. Follow the guide’s prerequisites for your system.

Thunderbolt-specific packages
Dell’s WD19/WD22 guide says Thunderbolt controller drivers and firmware apply only to computers that support Thunderbolt. It notes that Ice Lake and Tiger Lake chipsets have native Thunderbolt support and do not use that driver. Check the computer’s specifications and the model-specific guide before installing a Thunderbolt package.
Why updating may help
Dell lists dock-detection failures, no video, flickering, intermittent network connections, nonworking ports, and limited support for multiple displays among the problems that missing or outdated drivers can cause. An update is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that every hardware or connection problem will be fixed.

Check the current firmware package for your model
Package versions change, so check Dell Support for the latest release listed for your dock rather than relying on a version number from an older guide or article. As a dated example, Dell’s WD19/WD22TB4 Firmware Update Utility (Driver ID NKJG6) was released on April 30, 2026, with versions 01.01.03.01 / 01.01.14.01. Dell lists WD19 and WD22TB4-family compatibility for that package; this date and version are an example, not a claim that it remains the latest release. The package listing says the update fixes an issue encountered when installing version 01.01.13.01.
