You can reduce the risk of mod problems when updating Baldur’s Gate 3, but no backup or update method can guarantee every mod will keep working. Before installing a game patch, save your active load order and protect your saves; then check official mods in the in-game Mod Manager and third-party mods with their authors. If the game fails afterward, disable mods to isolate the cause before removing files.
Before you update: protect your saves and load order
First note the game version shown by your launcher or game client, then record which mods are active. This gives you a baseline to compare with each mod author’s compatibility notes after the patch. Save or export your load order with the manager you use, and keep a separate copy of important saves before changing or removing mods. Some mods can affect existing saves when disabled, so do not treat removal as risk-free.

If you use BG3 Mod Manager, its documentation describes saving load orders as external JSON files and exporting the active order to the game. These are features of that project, not requirements set by Larian. Follow the manager’s current instructions and confirm that the exported order matches the one you intend to use: BG3 Mod Manager documentation.
Check which update path each mod uses
Larian-supported mods
Open the in-game Mod Manager and select the Installed tab. If an Update button appears for a supported mod, use it. Larian says supported mods aim to offer greater compatibility, but warns that mods can still break when the game updates. Larian’s Official Mod Support page also notes that cross-saves can be affected by different game versions, so check version parity if you rely on cross-platform play.

Third-party mods
Check each mod’s author page or release notes for compatibility with the game build you are installing. The in-game manager’s update status does not establish that an unsupported, third-party mod is current. Larian says third-party mods do not receive the same built-in update and sync functions or full technical support as mods in its official pipeline. Larian’s mods and community library guidance explains this distinction.
Update the game, then test before changing more
- Confirm the target build. Check the live game version after the update; do not assume that a mod’s older compatibility statement still applies.
- Check mod status. Update supported mods from the in-game Installed tab when offered, and review current author notes for third-party mods.
- Launch and test cautiously. Load a backed-up save or test in a way that avoids overwriting your only copy. If the game launches, check the features or content tied to important mods before continuing a long play session.
- Keep the backup until stable. Retain the saved load order and original saves until you are confident the updated setup works.
A patch can cause mod issues, especially with third-party mods, but that does not mean every mod will fail. Compatibility depends on the game build and the individual mod; verify both rather than assuming the whole mod list is safe or broken.
If your modded game fails after an update
Start by distinguishing a mod problem from a game problem. Preserve your saves and load-order backup before disabling or removing anything, since some mods may affect existing saves. Larian recommends disabling official mods to see whether the problem persists. For a third-party mod issue after a major update, Larian’s guidance is to remove the mod files and test again. Change one relevant part of the setup at a time where practical, so you can identify what resolves the failure.

Larian’s PC troubleshooting instructions identify these locations for investigating third-party mod problems. They apply to Windows, not automatically to Mac or console installations:

Larian notes that older profile or configuration files may, in some circumstances, be copied from Documents. Do not delete or replace profile files casually; preserve a copy first and follow the applicable steps on Larian’s mod-issues support page. BG3 Mod Manager’s project documentation also describes checking whether an invalid mod causes modsettings.lsx to reset; that is manager-specific guidance, not a Larian guarantee.
Decide who should help
- If the problem disappears with mods disabled, contact the relevant mod author for help with a player-created mod.
- If it still happens without mods, use Larian Support for the game issue.
Larian says it cannot directly manage or fix player-created mods, so an official support request is not a substitute for checking the third-party mod author’s current instructions.

Multiplayer and cross-platform checks
For a modded multiplayer session, every participant needs the same mods at the same versions. Supported mods may show an Update button in the Installed tab; third-party versions need to be checked through their authors or the manager being used. Before joining, compare the party’s actual mod lists rather than relying on matching game titles or broad claims of compatibility.
Do not assume that a PC mod is available on console or Mac. Larian’s official pipeline is curated, subject to platform technical limits and internal testing, and cross-platform saves may be affected when game versions differ. Check supported availability and version parity for the specific platform combination you plan to use.
