You can update Android before WhatsApp, but Google and WhatsApp do not require that order. To reduce the risk of losing chats, first confirm that WhatsApp has a recent chat backup, then install the Android update, check that the phone works after restarting, and update WhatsApp from Google Play.
Before you start: check both backups
A WhatsApp chat backup and an Android device backup are separate. Check each one directly; a completed Android backup does not prove that WhatsApp chats can be restored.

For WhatsApp, make sure the backup is associated with the phone number and Google Account you intend to use, and that there is enough account storage. WhatsApp backups can be large and may use mobile data; Wi-Fi is advisable to avoid possible charges. Google’s device backup storage allowance does not mean a WhatsApp backup is complete or restorable.
Update Android safely
1. Check the current version and available update
- Open Settings > About phone or About tablet > Android version to check the Android version and security update status.
- Open Settings > System > Software updates to check for an update. Follow the prompts shown on your device.
Exact menu names and update availability vary by manufacturer, model, and carrier. Older devices may not support newer Android versions, and schedules differ across devices.

2. Prepare the phone
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Updates can be large and may take some time.
- Charge the phone to at least 75%, as Google recommends before updating.
- Allow time for the installation and do not interrupt an update that is in progress.
3. Install and check the phone
Start the update from the software update screen and follow the on-screen instructions. After the phone restarts, unlock it and check that it can connect to the network and that the functions you rely on work normally before moving on.
Update WhatsApp from Google Play
Once the phone has restarted and is working, open Google Play, find WhatsApp, and install the update if one is available. Use the official Play Store listing rather than an unfamiliar download site. WhatsApp’s Android download page currently lists Android OS 6.0 or above as its requirement; check that page for the current compatibility information, since requirements can change.

If a backup or restore is stuck
WhatsApp’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking your connection, available storage, battery or power, account sign-in, and Google Play Services. It also suggests restarting the phone or trying a different network. Avoid uninstalling WhatsApp as an early troubleshooting step if you are unsure that your chats are backed up. WhatsApp says chat history is not stored on its servers and that it cannot restore chats for you.
Google also notes that a backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. That constraint matters especially when moving to another phone or downgrading Android, rather than for a routine WhatsApp app update.
