To update the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller on Switch 2, first install the latest console system update, then open System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers. The Pro Controller must be powered on and paired with the console to be included.
Before you start
This guide is for the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, model HAC-013, not the separate Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo lists the original model as compatible with Switch 2 for wireless pairing. Nintendo’s pairing guidance can help you identify the controller by model number.
If the controller is not HAC-013, it may be a third-party controller. Nintendo advises contacting its manufacturer for support with third-party hardware. The firmware update itself is performed through Switch 2 settings; Nintendo’s instructions do not require a computer or phone app.
Update the Pro Controller from Switch 2 settings
- Update the console. From the HOME Menu, go to System Settings > System > System Update. The console checks for an available system update and downloads it if one is available.
- Power on and pair the original Pro Controller. Switch 2 includes powered-on, paired controllers in the controller update process. If the Pro Controller is not paired, pair it before continuing.
- Open the controller update command. Go to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers, then start the update.
- Let the update finish. If more than one controller is paired, Switch 2 updates them one at a time. Nintendo does not specify a fixed duration or a particular firmware version for this procedure.

If the controller update stops or fails
Retry an interrupted update
If the update stops before completion, return to System Settings > Controllers & Accessories > Update Controllers and try again. Nintendo specifically recommends retrying the update step.
If retrying does not work
- Confirm the console has its latest system update by checking System Settings > System > System Update.
- Restart the console.
- Reset the controller: press its SYNC button once, then press another button on the controller.
- Make sure the controller is powered on and paired, then try Update Controllers again.

If your Pro Controller is not listed for updating
- Check that it is the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, model HAC-013, rather than a third-party controller or the Switch 2 Pro Controller.
- Confirm it is powered on and paired with Switch 2, then reopen Update Controllers.
- If it is a third-party model, contact its manufacturer for pairing or firmware support.
The original controller can also be charged by connecting it to the Switch 2 dock with a USB cable, according to Nintendo’s Switch 2 accessory compatibility guidance.

On the original Nintendo Switch, the controller firmware command is under System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. Switch 2 uses Controllers & Accessories instead. Use the Switch 2 path when updating from a Switch 2 console.
