To update an NVIDIA SHIELD TV, open Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade and follow the on-screen prompts. You can also select Details on a system-update notification on the home screen. If an update will not download, check the network; if installation fails or the screen goes blank, use the symptom-specific steps below before considering a reset.
Check the current SHIELD software version
NVIDIA’s US release-notes page lists SHIELD Experience Upgrade 9.2.4 as its newest release, with security patches updated to January 2026. The notes also list fixes involving Disney+ playback, third-party remote connections, sleep and HDMI-CEC behavior, Bluetooth remote disconnections, and a settings-page issue when NVIDIA Share is triggered. This listing, checked October 4, 2026, does not establish that the update has reached every SHIELD model or region. Check your own device for availability. The About screen also shows software and firmware version details. NVIDIA’s menu labels vary across documentation and software generations: newer guides use Device Preferences, while an older guide describes Settings > Device > About > System upgrade. If you do not see Device Preferences, look in Settings for the equivalent About or System upgrade control.
Update SHIELD TV manually or automatically
- Connect SHIELD TV to the internet and leave it powered on.
- If an update notification appears on the home screen, select Details and allow the download and installation to proceed.
- To check manually, go to Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade, then follow the prompts.
- To enable automatic updates, open the same System upgrade settings, turn on Auto-upgrade, and choose when SHIELD should apply the upgrade if that option is shown.
- Wait for the installation and restart to finish before treating it as failed.
NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide and SHIELD TV Pro User Guide document the upgrade controls. The guides do not give a guaranteed installation time, so allow the device to complete the process rather than relying on a fixed countdown.

If a SHIELD update does not appear or download
A missing update may reflect internet trouble or availability, not necessarily a fault with the device. NVIDIA’s reviewed release notes do not provide a model-by-model or country-by-country rollout schedule.
Check Wi-Fi or Ethernet
- Wi-Fi: Confirm SHIELD is connected to the intended network and that the password is correct. Check whether another device can connect to the same Wi-Fi. If other devices also fail, investigate the router; then restart SHIELD and check for the update again.
- Ethernet: Check that the cable connects SHIELD to a working router or network port. NVIDIA notes that connecting Ethernet disables Wi-Fi networking while the cable is connected.
- Restricted networks: Hotel, school, and business Wi-Fi may not work with SHIELD TV. Try another available network or ask the network administrator.
Once internet access works, check again at Settings > Device Preferences > About > System upgrade. NVIDIA’s network troubleshooting guidance covers Wi-Fi and Ethernet checks.

“SHIELD System Upgrade failed to install”
First confirm that SHIELD has a working internet connection, restart it normally, and retry the update from the System upgrade screen. If installation still fails, contact NVIDIA support rather than immediately deleting local files.
NVIDIA’s older troubleshooting guide describes one possible remedy for a corrupted downloaded upgrade image: use a file explorer to delete the LocalNVIDIAAppOTA folder, reboot SHIELD, and retry the update. This is legacy guidance; NVIDIA does not confirm that the folder path or procedure applies to every current model or software version. Do not use it if the path differs, you are unsure what will be deleted, or the device’s menus do not match the instructions. Consult NVIDIA’s SHIELD troubleshooting guide or support for help specific to your device.

“My SHIELD Remote fails to apply a software update”
A remote or controller firmware update is separate from a SHIELD system update. Check the accessory’s charge and status in SHIELD’s accessories settings. NVIDIA says Battery: Good indicates that an accessory has enough charge to receive a software update.
If a sufficiently charged remote still will not connect, restart SHIELD. If needed, use Forget all accessories in the accessories settings and pair the remote again. NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guide covers accessory charging, connection, and update problems.

If the screen is blank during or after an update
A blank screen alone does not prove the update failed. Check the display path before considering a reset:
- Make sure SHIELD has power and is awake, the TV is on, and the selected TV input matches the HDMI port connected to SHIELD.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV and a known-good cable. NVIDIA recommends a High Speed HDMI cable shorter than 3 m.
- Check that the TV’s HDMI port is HDCP-compatible.
- Restart SHIELD and check whether its interface returns.
These checks come from NVIDIA’s SHIELD troubleshooting guide. Comparing a known-good port and cable with the current connection can help isolate a display-path problem; it is not a general fix for an update that will not download.

When to contact NVIDIA support
Contact NVIDIA if a normal restart and the relevant network or display checks do not resolve the problem, if SHIELD does not return to its normal interface, or if you cannot confirm that a legacy file-deletion procedure applies to your model. NVIDIA’s user guide directs users to support when troubleshooting does not solve the issue.
