Update an iPhone app layout incrementally: document what each affected screen does, change one screen or shared component at a time, then check the result across relevant sizes, text settings, languages, and orientations before applying the change elsewhere. The implementation differs between UIKit and SwiftUI, so choose techniques for the framework your app actually uses.
Start by recording what must not change
Before editing the interface, list the affected screens and the components they share. For each screen, note its navigation path, visible content, controls, and meaningful states. Identify the behavior the layout update is meant to preserve, such as where a button leads or how a form responds.
This inventory is a practical way to limit unintended changes, not a required Apple migration procedure. Keeping the work to one screen or reusable component at a time also makes it easier to spot which change caused a visual or behavioral regression.
Choose layout techniques for your framework
UIKit: use stack views for groups and Auto Layout for relationships
Stack views can arrange groups of views automatically; Auto Layout expresses relationships that govern view size and position. Apple summarizes the distinction: “Use stack views to lay out the views of your interface automatically. Use Auto Layout when you require precise placement of the views.” See Apple’s View layout guidance.

Use constraints to describe how views relate rather than relying on fixed coordinates. When content must stay clear of system bars or other obstructions, use the safe area: UIKit’s safeAreaLayoutGuide represents the unobscured portion of a visible view. For a view controller’s root view, it also accounts for specified additional safe-area insets. Apple explains this in its safe-area layout guide documentation.
SwiftUI: adjust the existing view hierarchy and modifiers
For a SwiftUI screen, work with its layout containers and modifiers, checking how their spacing, alignment, and safe-area behavior affect the result. Apple describes SwiftUI’s automatic layout approach in its SwiftUI documentation. Avoid assuming a particular container or modifier will suit every screen; the right choice depends on the existing view hierarchy and intended behavior.

Design for the available space, not one iPhone size
A screen’s geometry can change with window size and orientation, and the same interface may also need to accommodate iPad windowing. Localization can change text length or direction, while Dynamic Type can enlarge text and alter wrapping. Apple recommends accounting for these variations in interface design, rather than treating a nominal device screen as the only layout target. See its layout guidance.
- Use layout rules that respond to the available window and traits instead of hardcoding screen dimensions.
- Use layout margins and safe areas where appropriate so content respects the interface’s usable region.
- Check whether translated strings fit and whether right-to-left languages change the expected arrangement.
- Confirm that larger text remains readable and does not obscure controls or essential content.
Apple’s UIKit guidance discusses adapting interfaces with stack views or Auto Layout, layout margins, safe areas, and trait changes. The project’s deployment target and existing architecture determine which specific implementation choices are appropriate; the title alone does not establish those details.

Preview the cases most likely to expose regressions
For each changed screen, compare the new layout with the prior one in representative configurations. Xcode previews support device sizes, orientations, languages, and Dynamic Type variants. Apple also notes that some appearance and layout issues emerge only with particular system appearance, text-size, or accessibility settings. See Previews in Xcode and its interface preview guidance.
- Try a narrow and a wider available width.
- Check portrait and landscape if the app supports both.
- Preview long localized strings and the languages relevant to the app, including right-to-left direction if supported.
- Increase text size and inspect whether content wraps, scrolls, or overlaps.
- Review safe-area edges and system appearance settings that could affect visibility.
If a preview reveals a problem, inspect the running app with environmental overrides or use Xcode’s view debugger to investigate the layout. Once a screen or shared component behaves as intended, extend the pattern to other screens and recheck every screen that reuses it. This staged review is a cautious workflow, not an Apple guarantee that regressions will be prevented.

Keep UI restoration separate from durable app data
A layout revision does not by itself require a data migration. UIKit state preservation and restoration concerns selected UI state; it is separate from durable app data, and the system may discard restoration state. If the update changes restoration identifiers, view-controller creation, or which UI state is encoded, verify restoration separately. Do not rely on the UI restoration archive as the sole store for durable user data. See Apple’s view-controller state preservation and restoration documentation.
