The right firmware depends on the model and, where applicable, hardware revision; there is no single version that applies to every ASUS router.
Find the correct firmware version for your router
- Identify the router. Check its label or the router interface for the full model name and hardware revision, if shown. Do not choose a package just because another model looks similar.
- Check ASUS’s Product Security Advisory. Find the entry for your model and the security issue you need to address. Note the firmware version ASUS lists for that model, along with any readiness or support information.
- Open the matching ASUS support page. Use it to confirm available firmware and download the package only if you plan to install manually. Product instructions and file formats can differ.
ASUS recommends keeping routers on the latest firmware, but for a particular security issue, use the advisory’s model-specific information rather than assuming that a version listed for one router family fixes another.
Choose an update method

A computer can connect to the router by Wi-Fi or Ethernet for WebGUI access; ASUS does not require a wired connection for the update. If using manual upload, ASUS’s FAQ describes a .trx file for the devices it covers, but check your own model’s instructions rather than assuming the format is universal.
Update through the app or WebGUI
Using the ASUS Router App
- Open the ASUS Router App and go to Settings > Firmware Upgrade > Check Firmware Version.
- If the app offers an update, select Upgrade Now and follow the prompts.
- Let the router complete the update and reboot before signing in to check the installed version.
App labels and availability depend on the router model and software version. If the app does not offer the update you need, use a supported WebGUI method or the manual-upload process.

Using the WebGUI’s update controls
- Sign in to the router’s WebGUI and open Administration > Firmware Upgrade.
- Use the automatic or prompted update control available for your model, then follow the on-screen steps.
- Wait for the update and reboot to finish. If you schedule an automatic update, choose a time when the network is not in use.
Install firmware manually
- From the matching ASUS support page, download the firmware package for your exact model and hardware revision, if applicable.
- Extract the downloaded archive so you can select the firmware file inside it.
- Sign in to the WebGUI and open Administration > Firmware Upgrade. Choose the manual upload control, select the extracted file, confirm the selection, and start the upload.
- Do not switch off the router while the update is in progress. Wait for the router to reboot and return to service before continuing.
In an AiMesh setup, a manual update applies only to the router or node you selected. If multiple devices need updates, select each applicable device and use firmware intended for that device.
Verify the security fix after reboot
- Sign back in to the router after it has rebooted.
- Find the firmware version displayed in the router interface.
- Compare that exact version with the ASUS advisory entry for the same model and security issue. Use the corresponding ASUS support page if you need to confirm the available build.
A completed upload or a reboot is not enough to establish that the fix is installed. If the displayed version is not the target listed for your model, or ASUS does not list a fix for your device, consult the model-specific advisory and ASUS support rather than treating the issue as resolved.

When a factory reset or extra security steps apply
Do not assume every firmware update requires a factory reset. ASUS’s June 4, 2025 statement about CVE-2023-39780 specifically recommends updating to the latest firmware, performing a factory reset, and setting a strong administrator password. ASUS said this combination was intended to restore and maintain device security in response to reporting about that vulnerability. Follow the full statement if this is the issue affecting your router: ASUS’s official statement on router security.
If your router cannot be updated, ASUS’s general Product Security Advisory recommends disabling WAN or AiCloud remote access and resetting the device to defaults as risk-reduction steps. Check the advisory for your model and issue for any further guidance.
