To check for an update, open Settings > My Fire TV or Device & Software > About > Check for System Update. To see what is installed, find Software Version in the device information screen. Menu wording and update availability can vary by model.
Check for and install a Fire TV Stick update
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select My Fire TV or Device & Software. The label varies across devices.
- Choose About.
- Select Check for System Update. If the Stick offers an update, follow the instructions shown on screen.
This is Amazon’s general update path; the exact screen and any installation prompt can differ by device. Amazon’s Fire TV update instructions explain how to check for system updates.
Find the installed software version
Open the device information screen and read the Software Version details. Amazon Developer documents this path as Settings > Device > Fire TV > Software Version. Menu names may differ on your Stick, so look for the device or system information page if those labels are not present. Amazon Developer’s Fire OS Overview describes where to find the version.
Why Fire TV Sticks can show different versions
- Different models can use different software. Amazon documents several Fire OS versions across its Fire device families and lists some Fire TV Stick models separately under Vega OS. There is not one version that applies to every Stick. Check the Software Version on your own device rather than assuming another model’s version applies. Amazon’s device and software overview provides model-family mappings, which may change over time.
- Updates may arrive at different times. Amazon says, “Most Fire devices receive over-the-air updates to get Fire OS updates automatically.” Rollouts can still reach devices at different times, so the manual check may not offer an update immediately. Amazon Developer: Fire OS Overview.
Security update support dates are not lifespan estimates
Amazon says Fire TV devices receive security updates for at least four years from the date Amazon.com, as seller, first offers the device for purchase new; a later device-specific date applies if listed. Amazon explicitly says this support period is not a guarantee of how long a device will last. The model-specific support-through dates can change, so consult Amazon’s Fire TV security updates page for the current listing rather than treating a date for one Stick as applicable to all models.
