Vampire Crawlers has several separate progression tracks: character challenges, card and Arcana unlocks, permanent shop upgrades, and Relics that open new systems. For most characters, completing the listed condition is only the first step—you must also pay coins to recruit them at the Village Tavern. Check the in-game unlock list for the exact requirement on your current build, since April 2026 guides may not reflect every later adjustment.
How character unlocks work
Most characters become available after you meet a challenge, then recruit them with coins at the Village Tavern. Antonio is available by default. A challenge can ask you to reach a map milestone, play a card repeatedly, defeat enemies, collect coins, recover health, or find a coffin. The condition and the recruitment cost are distinct: completing the challenge does not necessarily add the character to your roster automatically.
The following examples come from Video Games Chronicle’s character guide, published April 27, 2026. Treat them as a useful route map rather than a guarantee for every current build.
Early map and character milestones
- Imelda: play Mad Forest.
- Pasqualina: reach level 20 with Imelda in Inlaid Library. Whisper of the House’s April 23, 2026 table reports a cost of 110 coins.
- Gennaro: clear Mad Forest. Whisper of the House reports a cost of 700 coins.
- Bianca Ramba: clear Dairy Plant.
- Gallo: clear Gallo Tower.
Card-use and modifier challenges
- Arca: play Fire Wand 100 times.
- Porta: play Lightning Ring 100 times.
- Poe: play Garlic 25 times.
- Lama: clear a dungeon with at least 10% Curse.
- Christine: play Pentagram. The VGC guide says Pentagram becomes available after reaching level 35 in a run.
Coins, defeats, and healing
- Dommario: earn 5,000 coins.
- Krochi: defeat 6,666 enemies in total.
- Yatta: defeat 250 Lion Heads.
- O’Sole: defeat 50 Dragon Shrimps.
- Mortaccio: defeat 444 Skeletons.
- Suor Clerici: recover 1,000 HP in total.
Coffin discoveries and special conditions
- Pugnala: find the coffin in Berserk Wood. Whisper of the House reports a cost of 1,440 coins.
- Poppea: find the coffin in Milk Factory.
- Concetta: find the coffin in Gallo Tower.
- Giovanna: find the coffin in Library Sanctum.
- MissingN0: defeat Red Death.
For the regular roster, Whisper of the House’s April 23, 2026 table also lists character costs and Crawler-card effects: Imelda costs 10 coins and her card adds 15 XP; Pasqualina’s card adds 10 Speed; Gennaro’s card adds 1 Amount. The same guide says Crawler cards also have color bonuses. These secondary-source details can help you decide whom to recruit, but the in-game Tavern and unlock descriptions are the best place to confirm current costs and effects.

A practical route for unlocking characters
- Open the in-game unlock list and choose a condition you can make progress on during ordinary runs.
- Advance through maps and explore. Early map clears can satisfy character conditions, while exploration can lead to coffins.
- Use the relevant cards when available. If a challenge tracks plays, focus on that card rather than assuming merely owning it will count.
- Check the challenge again after the run. Confirm that its counter or completion state changed before spending time on another attempt.
- Recruit the character at the Village Tavern and pay the displayed coin cost if one is required.
This approach prioritizes progress that can overlap with normal map advancement. Save repeated-card or unusual modifier targets for a deliberate run once the relevant card or system is available; this is a practical way to organize the listed conditions, not a verified fastest route.
How cards and weapon upgrades become available
Vampire Crawlers is a turn-based, card-driven roguelite. According to the official Steam description, gaining experience lets you level up and acquire cards; chests provide power-ups and gems that augment cards; and weapon evolutions are another progression goal. Cards can be played in ascending mana order to build combos, while Wild cards extend combo chains.
That describes the run’s progression loop, not a complete list of every card’s unlock condition. For a particular card, use the exact wording in the current in-game unlock list. A character challenge that requires repeated plays is also different from a card’s initial unlock: first make the card available, then work on the required number of plays.
Relics and permanent progression systems
Some milestones do more than add an individual card or character: Relics open systems that support longer-term progression. PC Gamer’s April 23, 2026 guide reports these milestones:

- Grim Grimoire: found in Library West Wing after clearing Inlaid Library; records discovered weapon evolutions.
- Stardust Anvil: awarded for clearing Teeny Bridge; opens the Blacksmith’s Shop, where you can add gem slots to cards.
The guide also describes Village shop upgrades bought with coins as permanent stat upgrades. It recommends Recovery, Reroll, Duration, Might, and Luck as early priorities, but that is strategy advice—not a required order or a universally best build. Confirm the current item descriptions and prices in the shop.
Arcana challenges
After Polentir opens the Fortune Teller’s tent, Arcana become available through challenges, according to PC Gamer. Its examples include Over the Top, for playing Crawler cards 100 times, and Your Shield My Liege, for gaining 2,000 armor over adventures. The guide reports these thresholds; use the game’s challenge text to verify the current requirement.

How to choose what to pursue next
Pick a goal based on what you want to unlock and what your current runs already support:
Quick Recap
Best Value
- SCHEME AND FIGHT FOR INFLUENCE AND POWER!
- Strategy, bluff, and deduction.
- Each clan plays and feels different from all others.
- Build your hand of cards according to your plans!
- Want another character? Choose a condition that overlaps with your next map or a card you already use, then remember to budget for the Tavern cost.
- Want more card options? Progress through levels and chests, and check the individual card’s unlock text rather than assuming every card is awarded for clearing a map.
- Want a new system? Prioritize the map and Relic milestone associated with Arcana, the evolution record, or gem-slot customization.
- Want stronger permanent stats? Review the Village shop and spend coins on the upgrades that suit your needs; guide recommendations are optional strategy, not prerequisites.
Why an unlock may not appear
- The condition is complete, but the character is not recruited: visit the Village Tavern and check whether you still need to pay coins.
- A card-play challenge did not advance: verify that you used the named card and that the in-game counter changed; simply owning or drawing it may not satisfy a play-count objective.
- A system remains unavailable: check whether its Relic or map-clear prerequisite has been met, rather than looking only for a character or card reward.
- A guide’s condition does not match your game: consult the current unlock list and the Steam announcements and update notes. The Steam notes document adjustments to card and gem interactions, so guide details from April 2026 may not describe every later build.
