Blizzard announced that, starting with Season 10, new heroes would be unlocked immediately when they launch and existing heroes would be unlocked for players. New players must still complete the first-time user experience. You can try heroes in the Practice Range, then use its bots and adjustable targets—or a Hero Mastery course, if available—to build specific skills.
How hero unlocks work
Blizzard’s Season 10 developer update states that new heroes are immediately unlocked at launch and that existing heroes are unlocked for players. New players first need to complete the first-time user experience. Blizzard says heroes from the original Overwatch roster unlock before Overwatch 2 heroes become available. Your current game client is the best place to confirm any account-specific prompts.

Some older guides describe a different system because the rules changed. In a Season 2 catch-up article, Blizzard described selecting a hero challenge, practicing the hero in the Practice Range, and winning matches to complete the challenge; it also mentioned a shop option. A separate 2022 explainer covered the Battle Pass-era system, in which new heroes appeared on the free track and past heroes could return through challenges or the shop. Those are historical descriptions, not the current default unlock steps established by Blizzard’s later Season 10 announcement.
Where to try a hero before playing regular matches
Use the Practice Range to try heroes before unlocking them for regular play. Blizzard’s 2022 explainer says all heroes can be played automatically in the Practice Range, even before they are unlocked. Menu labels and account prompts may vary, so follow the options shown in your current client.

How to practice with the Practice Range
The range is useful for open-ended experimentation. Blizzard says its update added practice bots and a firing range where players can choose targets or bots, adjust target distance, and change how targets move. Use those controls to create drills that match the skill you want to work on:
- Aim: Track moving targets or practice landing shots at different distances.
- Projectile timing: Test how far ahead to aim when a target is moving.
- Ability range: Try abilities from different positions to learn their practical reach.
- Movement: Move while aiming or using abilities to practice maintaining control.
These are practice suggestions, not official performance benchmarks. Blizzard’s Invasion update describes the configurable bots and targets; use the settings available in your current range.

When to use Hero Mastery
Hero Mastery is a single-player mode for honing selected heroes’ skills and abilities. Blizzard describes it as always available, but its courses cover only particular heroes, and the available roster can vary. Courses challenge players to move quickly, defeat training bots, and collect emblems. Check the current in-game menu to see whether a course is available for the hero you want.
The Hero Mastery overview explains the mode and its course format. Use it when you want a structured, hero-specific challenge; choose the Practice Range when you want to freely test weapons, abilities, or target behavior.

A simple practice sequence
- Open the Practice Range and select the hero you want to try.
- Test the hero’s primary fire and abilities against bots or targets.
- Adjust target distance and movement to vary the drill.
- If Hero Mastery offers a course for that hero, try it for structured challenges and course performance tracking.
- When you feel comfortable, move into a live mode that suits your experience level. This is a practical progression, not a Blizzard requirement.
