If you can’t open work apps on a Samsung Galaxy, first check whether the Work Profile is paused or whether its separate passcode is locked. A Work Profile passcode is different from the Galaxy’s screen-lock PIN, password, or pattern. If you know the profile passcode, use Work Profile security settings; if you forgot it or your employer manages the setting, contact your organization’s IT administrator. Samsung’s device-lock recovery steps do not reset a Work Profile passcode.
Check what is actually locked
Work apps usually have a briefcase badge on their icons. If those icons are gray, the Work Profile may be paused rather than blocked by a forgotten passcode. Google explains how to identify work apps and check profile status in its Android Work Profile help.
You can look for a Work tab under Settings → Passwords and accounts. On Android 14 or later, you can also search for Work Profile settings from the main Settings app. Menu names may vary by Samsung model and software version.
Know the difference between the two locks
The Galaxy screen lock protects access to the device. The Work Profile lock protects managed work apps and their data. On Android 9.0 and later, an organization can require a separate passcode for the Work Profile. Google’s Work Profile overview describes the profile’s separation of work apps and data from personal content.

Android Smart Lock applies to the device screen lock, not the Work Profile lock. Changing a setting for one lock does not necessarily change the other.
If you know the Work Profile passcode
Google documents this route for setting or changing the profile lock. The exact menu labels can differ on Samsung devices, and changing an existing lock may require you to enter its current credential. See Google’s Lock your Work Profile instructions.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Security and privacy, then More security settings.
- Tap Work Profile security.
- Choose the lock option and follow the prompts. If asked, enter the current Work Profile pattern, PIN, or password.
Google lists no lock, pattern, PIN, password, and supported biometrics as possible options. A PIN must contain at least four numbers; a password must contain at least four letters or numbers. Biometrics still require a pattern, PIN, or password as an additional credential. The fallback credential is requested after a restart and may be required periodically.
If you forgot the Work Profile passcode
Google’s published instructions explain how to set or change the lock; they do not provide a general end-user bypass for a forgotten Work Profile passcode. Contact your employer’s IT administrator or device-management help desk and ask for the organization’s approved recovery process. Work-profile rules can be set by the organization, so there is no single recovery sequence that applies to every managed Samsung device.

Avoid repeated guesses. Your administrator sets the invalid-attempt limit, and exceeding it removes the Work Profile and its associated data from the device. Google states: “If you exceed the limit, your Work Profile and associated data is removed from your device.” The limit is not universal; ask IT before making further attempts.
Keep Samsung screen-lock recovery separate
Samsung’s previous-lock recovery instructions apply to the Galaxy device screen lock, not the Work Profile passcode. Samsung India says the feature is available on supported Galaxy models running One UI 6.1 or later. After a screen-lock method is changed, the previous method is retained for 72 hours and can be used once per lock type. The “Forgot PIN/Password/Pattern” option appears after five or more unsuccessful device-unlock attempts; Samsung says three incorrect entries of the previous method end further attempts. Those steps may help if you cannot unlock the phone itself, but they do not unlock work apps protected by a separate profile credential.

Samsung describes SmartThings Find’s Erase data option as a factory reset that permanently deletes device data; a Samsung account login is required. It is not a targeted Work Profile passcode reset. If you are considering a factory reset, consult your organization’s IT team and Samsung’s official support first, and confirm that important data is backed up.

For administrators managing Samsung Work Profiles
Android Work Profiles separate managed work apps and data from personal content. Samsung for Business describes tools such as Knox Manage and Knox Suite for organizations deploying and managing profiles.
