You may be able to regain access to a Samsung tablet without erasing it if Samsung offers a previous-lock option for your device, or if your situation qualifies for its biometric lock-reset guidance. Neither option is universal. If no eligible recovery method is available, a factory reset may restore access—but it erases local data and can still require the Google account previously used on the tablet.
Check whether you can regain access without erasing data
Try the non-erasing options before resetting. Their availability depends on the tablet, its software, and what was configured before it became locked; they are not general ways to bypass a screen lock.
If you changed the lock recently
Check the lock screen for Samsung’s previous-lock option. Samsung US describes this for eligible cases where the previous screen-lock method is still retained under the device’s rules. If the option does not appear, do not assume you can recover the tablet this way. See Samsung’s screen-unlock troubleshooting guidance.
If biometrics still let you into the tablet
Samsung UK describes a limited situation in which biometric access can be used to reset lock methods. Follow the guidance only if your device and circumstances match; biometric access does not always let you replace a forgotten PIN or password. If the screen is broken, not the lock forgotten
If a cracked touchscreen prevents input but you know the valid screen credential, Samsung says a USB mouse and keyboard connected through an adapter can help you operate the tablet. This solves an input problem; it does not unlock a tablet when you do not know its PIN, password, or pattern. Details are in Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance.
Why SmartThings Find cannot remotely unlock it
Samsung UK says remote unlocking through SmartThings Find is no longer possible. Samsung Find or SmartThings Find may offer location or remote-erase functions under the required conditions, but erasing the tablet is not password recovery. Remote erase depends on the tablet having power and a stable network connection, a Samsung account added, and remote controls enabled. Compare your options before choosing a reset

Before proceeding, consider whether the non-erasing feature is actually available, whether you can verify the Samsung and Google accounts associated with the tablet, and whether the instructions match its model and software.
Reset the tablet only if data loss is acceptable
A factory reset removes personal information and data stored on the tablet. If you cannot access a backup, files stored only on the device may not be recoverable. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by model, carrier, and software version, so do not rely on a universal button sequence.

- Identify the exact tablet model. Use Samsung’s tablet support directory to look up the device and its official manual.
- Open the model-specific reset instructions. Follow Samsung’s procedure for that tablet rather than instructions for a different Galaxy Tab. Samsung’s general explanation of reset consequences is in its factory-reset guide.
- Make the data decision before confirming. A reset is destructive; proceed only if you accept losing data that is not backed up.
- Complete setup with the account checks requested. Google Factory Reset Protection may require the Google account previously registered on the tablet. A recovery-menu reset does not remove this ownership check.
If setup rejects your account or you cannot find the right steps
Use Google’s account recovery process for your own account if you cannot sign in. If you are unsure which reset procedure applies, face a hardware problem, or cannot complete setup after reset, contact Samsung tablet support for model lookup, manuals, troubleshooting, repair requests, and contact options. Do not use third-party bypass tools or services to defeat account verification.
