There is no general setting on the phone that removes a carrier restriction. First confirm that the problem is a carrier lock—not a forgotten screen PIN or a SIM-card PIN—then check the original carrier’s current eligibility rules and request process.
Identify which kind of lock you’re dealing with
“Unlock” can mean several different things on a Galaxy A20. Work out what the phone is asking for before changing settings or contacting a carrier.
| What you see or want to do | What it means | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| The phone asks for a PIN, password, or pattern before you can use it | Screen lock: it controls access to the handset. | Use the screen-lock recovery options for your situation; a carrier unlock will not remove it. Verizon lists screen-lock help separately from carrier unlocking in its Galaxy A20 support topics. |
| The phone asks for a PIN associated with the SIM card | SIM PIN: it protects the SIM, rather than restricting the phone to one carrier. | Use the SIM PIN help for the SIM and carrier. Do not guess repeatedly; follow the carrier’s instructions. Verizon covers this separately in its Galaxy A20 support topics. |
| A SIM from another carrier is rejected or the phone displays a SIM restriction message | Potential carrier or network lock. | Contact the carrier that sold or authorized the phone and ask it to check the device’s unlock status and eligibility. |
| You want to change firmware or modify startup software | Bootloader or OEM unlocking: a development-related topic, not a carrier SIM unlock. | Do not use carrier-unlock instructions. The official sources cited here do not establish a reliable procedure for every Galaxy A20 variant. |
Verizon describes carrier locks as software restrictions that limit a device to a carrier’s network. Its support page says a non-Verizon SIM may produce “SIM Not Supported,” but warns that the wording can vary by manufacturer. Treat that message as a clue, not conclusive proof of the phone’s lock status or compatibility.
How to request a carrier unlock
- Identify the original carrier. Check the purchase receipt, account records, or the seller who supplied the phone. The carrier’s rules generally apply to devices it sold or authorized. T-Mobile directs owners of devices it did not sell or authorize to the carrier or manufacturer that sold the device in its SIM unlock policy.
- Find the exact Galaxy A20 model or variant. Check the model information in the phone’s settings or on its packaging, then give that information to the original carrier and the carrier you want to use. Network support can differ by variant.
- Check the original carrier’s current eligibility terms. Use its official account page, unlock checker, or support channel. Ask whether the device is locked, whether the account or payment conditions are satisfied, and whether the carrier must submit a request or will unlock the phone automatically.
- Submit the official request or follow the carrier’s instructions. Provide the requested account and device details. Do not assume that a third-party tool, a new SIM, or a generic Android setting can remove a carrier restriction.
- Follow the carrier’s completion steps and test with the new SIM. If the phone remains restricted, contact the carrier that handled the request rather than repeating unrelated screen-lock or SIM-PIN steps.
- Check compatibility with the destination carrier. Ask it to confirm support for the exact A20 variant, including network access and features such as Wi-Fi calling and hotspot.
Carrier rules are different—and can change
The following are examples of carrier-specific policies, not universal requirements. Check the live policy before relying on a threshold or expected processing time.

T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s policy applies to devices it sold or authorized. Its eligibility terms require, among other things, that the device not be reported lost, stolen, or blocked and that the account be in good standing. For a postpaid device, the policy calls for at least 40 days active on the requesting line and full payment of any T-Mobile financing. Prepaid rules differ: the policy states a 365-day period for devices activated on its network, with separate conditions when activation is more recent. T-Mobile says eligible unlocking is free; remotely unlockable devices are automatically unlocked within two business days after becoming eligible, while other devices receive next steps. These details are from T-Mobile’s current SIM unlock policy and may change.
AT&T
For a Samsung device released before September 1, 2025, AT&T’s support page gives this status-check path: Settings > About phone > Software information, then inspect Service provider software version. Use AT&T’s page to interpret the displayed code; a status that is locked or unclear can be followed by an unlock request. AT&T distinguishes original AT&T software codes from devices previously unlocked or not supported by its solution. If you are not an AT&T customer, the page says you must confirm the request from an email within 24 hours. Its AT&T Prepaid rules include a 12-month paid-service condition. See AT&T’s device unlock instructions for current criteria and the request route.

Verizon
Verizon’s current policy and FAQ explain its lock rules and note that a locked device may display “SIM Not Supported” with a non-Verizon SIM; the message can vary. Verizon also says a locked device may still roam on another carrier’s network. Roaming is not the same as being unlocked to use a different carrier’s SIM. Because Verizon’s FAQ references policy changes beginning January 27, 2026, consult its current device-unlocking FAQ rather than relying on older summaries.

Carrier unlocking removes a restriction; it does not guarantee that the phone supports every network band, calling feature, or service offered by another provider. Compatibility depends on the exact Galaxy A20 variant and destination network.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. - Ask the destination carrier to check the model or variant, not just the “Galaxy A20” name.
- Confirm voice and data support and coverage where you plan to use the phone.
- Ask whether Wi-Fi calling and hotspot are supported for that specific device. Samsung’s 2019 U.S. Galaxy A20 datasheet describes model-level network compatibility but says some services vary by provider; it is not a current guarantee for every carrier or region.
If the phone still won’t accept the new SIM
- Ask the original carrier to verify the lock status. A message can be a clue, but its wording varies, and the carrier can check whether an unlock was completed.
- Check that the request is actually complete. If the carrier says more steps are needed, follow those instructions or ask it to clarify the device-specific process.
- Ask the new carrier to verify compatibility. An unlocked phone may still lack support for the destination network or particular services.
- Return to the correct support path if the prompt is a PIN. A screen PIN or SIM PIN is not resolved by requesting a network unlock.
