To restore normal keys, suspend the AutoHotkey script that is changing them. If that fixes the problem, exit the script to stop it for now, or remove the remapping line from its .ahk file and reload the script to make the change permanent. Suspending is reversible; exiting does not erase the remap from the file.
Restore normal keys by suspending the script
- Find the running AutoHotkey script using its tray icon or main window. In AutoHotkey v2, suspension is available from either place; labels may differ by version.
- Choose the script’s suspend control. Suspension disables its hotkeys and hotstrings. AutoHotkey implements remaps as hotkeys, so the script’s remapping should stop too. If the keys behave normally again, that script was responsible.
- To resume the remap later, unsuspend the script.
For example, a script line such as a::b makes A behave like B while that script is active. AutoHotkey describes a remap as a pair of hotkeys, which is why suspending the script affects it. See the AutoHotkey v2 remapping documentation and Suspend documentation.
Choose between suspending, exiting, and editing

Remove a remap from the script
- Open the
.ahkfile used by the running script. - Find the remapping directive, such as
a::b, and remove it or change its source or destination key. - Save the file, then run or reload the script. Editing the file alone does not update a script that is already running. AutoHotkey’s program documentation explains that changes must be run or reloaded to take effect.
If the keys are still remapped
If suspending or exiting the script does not restore normal behavior, the remap may come from another source. Check whether another AutoHotkey script is running, then consider other mapping layers such as Windows settings, keyboard firmware, or a separate remapping utility. AutoHotkey’s cited documentation covers script-level remaps, not a complete procedure for diagnosing every other layer, so identify the source before resetting unrelated keyboard settings.
AutoHotkey version considerations
The v2 documentation describes suspension through the tray icon or main window, while the legacy v1 remapping reference also says that Suspend affects remaps. The concept applies to both versions, but syntax and interface labels can vary. If a step does not match your screen, check the installed major version against the official AutoHotkey downloads page and use documentation for that version. The same official page points to removal information if you decide to uninstall.
