If you know which Windows 11 option you changed, go back to that control and switch it back. Privacy controls are under Settings > Privacy & security; power mode is under Settings > System > Power & battery; and visual effects are in the Visual Effects tab of Windows’ performance-options dialog. If you cannot identify the change or several system settings changed together, consider a restore option—but understand its scope before proceeding.
Undo one privacy or performance setting
Windows does not have one universal button that restores every privacy and performance preference. The narrowest approach is to find the same control you changed and restore its previous value.
Privacy settings
- Open Settings > Privacy & security.
- Review the general privacy options and the specific settings pages linked from this section.
- Switch the relevant control back to its earlier state.
Some privacy controls are on their own pages rather than in one master list, so check the specific categories if the option is not immediately visible. Labels and availability can vary by Windows version and device. On a work or school PC, an organization may manage some controls.
Power mode
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select the mode you want.
Windows offers Best power efficiency, Balanced, and Best performance. The first favors battery savings, Balanced aims to balance performance and battery life, and Best performance favors performance. The available control can depend on the device configuration.

Visual effects
- Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, then open the matching result.
- On the Visual Effects tab, review the options and restore the effects you changed.
- Select Apply, then OK.
If you do not remember the original selection, choose the effects you want rather than assuming one setting is right for every PC. Visual effects can affect appearance and responsiveness differently across devices.
Choose a rollback that matches the size of the problem
Use a broader recovery method only when changing the individual control back is not practical. Each step below can undo more than the setting you meant to reverse.

Use System Restore for a broader system change
System Restore can help if a recent system-wide change caused the problem and there is a restore point from before it. It returns system files, registry settings, and installed programs to the selected point, but does not affect personal files. Programs or drivers installed after that point may be removed, and other system changes made since then may also be reversed.
- Search Start for Create a restore point and check whether System Protection is enabled and whether a suitable point is listed.
- To open the restore wizard, search Control Panel for Recovery and select Open System Restore. Alternatively, press Windows+R, enter
rstrui.exe, and press Enter. - Select a restore point dated before the problem. Use Scan for affected programs if available to review programs and drivers that may be changed.
- Review the selection and follow the wizard to begin the restore.
Microsoft’s current support guidance says System Protection is not enabled by default, so a usable restore point is not guaranteed. If there is no suitable point, use a narrower setting-level reversal or consider another recovery option.

Consider point-in-time restore only for a supported recent snapshot
For Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, point-in-time restore can roll back apps, settings, and personal files to a recent snapshot. Microsoft says these points are retained for up to 72 hours. Choose the snapshot time carefully: changes made after it can be lost, including changes to personal files.

Reset this PC reinstalls Windows. Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings; Remove everything also removes personal files. Back up important files before starting either reset. If the device is encrypted with BitLocker, make sure you have the recovery key.
