The right way to unblock a website depends on what is blocking it: a setting on your device, DNS filtering, a school or workplace network rule, a location restriction, or the website itself. Start by identifying the cause. If the restriction is on a managed network, ask its administrator for approved access rather than trying to bypass the policy.
First, identify where the block is coming from
Notice the error message and whether the site fails on other devices or networks. A browser permission or family-safety setting affects a device or account; DNS filtering acts on a domain name; a school or workplace filter is enforced by the network; and a site may deny access directly. These restrictions are not interchangeable, so a workaround for one may do nothing for another.
- Only one browser or device is affected: check settings you control, such as site permissions or authorized family-safety controls.
- The site fails on a managed school or work connection: check the acceptable-use policy and ask the administrator to review the block or grant an exception.
- The site is unavailable only from a particular network or location: the cause may be network filtering or a location-based restriction; a VPN or Tor may help in some cases, but neither guarantees access.
- The site fails everywhere: the site itself may be down, denying access, or using a broken address. Changing your network route may not help.
Use changes only on devices and networks you own or are authorized to administer. For DNS filtering, Cloudflare explains that filtering is applied to the hostname and that routing through a VPN or proxy can change what the filtering system sees; this is why changing DNS is not a universal fix (Cloudflare DNS filtering documentation).
Eight ways to try, from settings to limited workarounds

1. Check a setting you control
If you own or administer the device and have a reason to suspect a local setting, inspect the browser’s site permissions and device-level controls. Change only the specific setting that appears to be causing the problem. Do not turn off a firewall wholesale: doing so can expose the device without addressing the actual block.

For Microsoft Family Safety, an authorized organizer can manage specific allowed and blocked sites for supported browsers and devices using Microsoft’s instructions: Filter websites and searches using Microsoft Family Safety.
2. Use a VPN where permitted
A VPN sends traffic through a VPN service, which may change the IP address visible to a website or network. This can help with some network or location-based restrictions, but the site or network may block VPN traffic. A VPN does not make every restriction disappear, and its use may violate a school or workplace policy. No particular VPN provider is recommended here; assess a service’s current privacy and security practices before relying on it.

3. Use a web proxy cautiously
A web proxy relays browser requests and can sometimes get around a narrow web-access block. It is not the same as an assurance of privacy: the available evidence does not establish that any particular free public proxy is trustworthy or secure. Schools and workplaces may block proxy sites or prohibit their use, so check the applicable policy before trying one.
4. Try Tor Browser when appropriate
If direct access to Tor is blocked, the Tor Project documents built-in pluggable transports, including obfs4, meek, Snowflake, and WebTunnel. Their effectiveness depends on the individual circumstances, and bridges may make connections slower. See the Tor Project’s circumvention guidance.

Tor is not a substitute for checking the destination or using HTTPS. The Tor Project states: “Tor will encrypt your traffic to and within the Tor network, but the encryption of your traffic to the final destination website depends on that website.” It also warns that documents opened in an external application can make network requests outside Tor. For sensitive activity, use HTTPS and verify the address; see Tor Project guidance on HTTPS.
5. Try the site’s IP address only for a basic domain-name block
If a simple filter blocks a domain name but not its address, entering the site’s IP address might work. It often will not: many websites share hosting or rely on modern routing, HTTPS certificates may not match an address, and a network can block the IP itself. Do not use this as a way around school or workplace controls.

6. Check the HTTPS version
If you have an old HTTP address, try the site’s HTTPS version. A simplistic filter may handle the two addresses differently, but this is not a dependable fix. HTTPS is the safer choice; never switch a sensitive connection to HTTP just to reach a page. Security.org lists HTTP/HTTPS switching as a possible basic-filter workaround, not a guarantee (Security.org’s guide to unblocking websites).
7. Look for an available cached copy
A search engine or archive may have a saved copy of a page, if one is available. It may be out of date, and it will not reproduce live features such as logins, forms, or updated information. Availability changes, so look for a current cached or archived version rather than relying on a particular search-engine cache feature.

8. Prefer the canonical URL over a short link
A URL shortener can sometimes evade a rudimentary filter, but it is an unreliable workaround and conceals where the link leads. Prefer the site’s direct, official address. If you receive a short link, inspect its final destination before opening it, especially if the content asks for credentials or payment information.

At school
Ask a teacher, librarian, or network administrator to review the blocked site and explain the educational need. In England, Department for Education guidance says filtering should not unreasonably affect teaching and learning and that schools should have a process to review issues. It also asks schools to consider whether filtering blocks circumvention technologies such as VPNs and proxies. This is guidance for schools in England, not a universal legal rule: Department for Education filtering and monitoring standards.
At work
Check your organization’s acceptable-use policy and request an exception from IT or your manager if the site is needed for legitimate work. Organizations may monitor network traffic, and the rules and consequences depend on the organization and jurisdiction. A proxy, VPN, or Tor connection is not a policy exemption.
Why a workaround may fail
- The method targets the wrong layer: a browser setting will not fix a network-level DNS restriction, and changing DNS will not necessarily defeat a device rule or site-side denial.
- The network blocks the workaround: VPNs, proxies, and Tor access can themselves be restricted.
- The site needs more than its IP address: shared hosting, routing, and HTTPS can prevent an IP-only address from working.
- The copy is not live: a cached page can be stale or missing interactive features.
- The block is intentional: on a managed network, only the administrator can authorize an exception.
There is no universal success rate for these methods. Their usefulness depends on the kind of block, the device and network, and whether the method is permitted.
