Type ¿ on Windows
Use the numeric keypad
- Click where you want the character.
- Hold Alt, type 0191 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt.
Microsoft documents this Alt code for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It requires the numeric keypad; typing 0191 on the number row above the letters will not work. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts guide lists the code.
If your laptop has no separate keypad, use an available built-in numeric keypad layer, connect an external keypad, or insert the character with Character Map or the Windows symbol picker. Whether a laptop has a keypad layer—and how to activate it—depends on its hardware.
In Microsoft Word, convert the Unicode code
- Type 00BF where you want the mark.
- Press Alt+X to convert the code to ¿.
This conversion shortcut is for Word, not a universal Windows shortcut. Microsoft documents it in its instructions for inserting ASCII and Unicode character codes in Word. If it does not convert in your app, use Word’s Insert > Symbol command or the Windows symbol picker instead.

For frequent Spanish typing, add a keyboard layout
Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region and add another keyboard layout. Switch layouts from the language/input indicator or press Windows key + Space. An alternate layout can make characters absent from the current layout easier to enter, but the key for ¿ depends on the selected layout; there is no single shortcut to assume for every Spanish or US-International layout. Type ¿ on an iPhone
- Tap the text field to open the onscreen keyboard.
- Touch and hold ?.
- If ¿ appears in the character picker, slide to it and release.
The available characters can depend on the active keyboard and layout. Apple describes the general touch-and-hold gesture for selecting onscreen character variants, but its cited guidance does not specifically list ¿; the exact mark may not appear on every iPhone keyboard configuration. If it is missing, add and switch to a Spanish keyboard using the keyboard’s language options. Apple’s keyboard guidance covers character variants and language keyboards.

Type ¿ on Android with Gboard
First try touching and holding ? on Gboard and select ¿ if offered. The available punctuation can vary by keyboard app and active layout. If the mark is not available, add a Spanish layout:
- Open a text field so Gboard appears.
- Open Gboard Settings > Languages > Add keyboard.
- Choose Spanish and the layout you want, then tap Done.
- Switch to the added keyboard from Gboard when typing.
Adding Spanish to Gboard changes the keyboard language, not the Android device’s display language. Google notes that some setup steps require Android 7.0 or later, and menu labels may differ by device or Gboard version. These instructions apply to Gboard, not necessarily other Android keyboards. Why Spanish uses ¿
In Spanish, ¿ opens an interrogative sentence or clause, and the ordinary question mark, ?, closes it. For example: ¿Cómo estás? The character is Unicode U+00BF, distinct from the closing question mark. The Royal Spanish Academy’s guidance on question and exclamation marks explains their use.
