In Word for Windows, type 221E and press Alt+X. For Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, use the app’s symbol picker or the version-specific steps below. If you’re entering math, use infty followed by Space inside a supported equation—not in ordinary text.
Choose a method that matches what you’re typing
- One symbol in ordinary text or a cell: use the app’s Symbol picker. Word for Windows also supports
221Efollowed by Alt+X. - Mathematical notation: insert an equation and type
infty, then press Space. - Outlook: first identify whether you’re using New Outlook or classic Outlook; their Windows steps differ.
The equation command is for an equation box, not a universal shortcut for plain text. Microsoft documents Math AutoCorrect commands for supported desktop Office apps, but not Office web apps; availability can also vary in older versions. See Microsoft’s Math AutoCorrect commands and symbols.
Word: insert ∞ in text or an equation
Word for Windows: convert the Unicode code
- Click where the character should go and type
221E. - Press Alt+X. Word converts the hexadecimal code to ∞.
- If the code touches other hexadecimal characters, select only
221Ebefore pressing Alt+X.
This is Word’s documented Unicode conversion workflow; don’t assume it works in every Office app. See Microsoft’s Unicode character code instructions for Word.
Word: use the symbol picker
Choose Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, locate infinity, and insert it. If it is hard to find or displays incorrectly, try another font in the dialog; available characters vary by font. Microsoft identifies Segoe UI Symbol as a broad symbol font in its Word symbol insertion guidance.

Word: enter infinity in an equation
- Press Alt+= to open an equation in Word for Windows.
- Type
inftyand press Space. The equation converts it to ∞.
Microsoft also lists infinity. If the command does not convert, check whether the equation is using LaTeX mode rather than Unicode conversion mode. The Math AutoCorrect guide describes the supported commands and modes.
Excel: put infinity in a cell or an equation
Ordinary cell content
Select the cell, then choose Insert > Symbol and select ∞. This is the menu-based route for inserting a standalone character into ordinary cell content.

Mathematical equation
Choose Insert > Symbols > Equation to open Excel’s equation workflow, then type infty and press Space where Math AutoCorrect is supported. Do not use equation syntax when you simply want a character in a cell. See Microsoft’s keyboard equation workflows and Math AutoCorrect guide.
PowerPoint: insert infinity in text or math
Standalone text
Choose Insert > Symbol, then select ∞. The picker is the safer choice for a text box because Unicode conversion workflows are not supported identically in every Office program.

Equation notation
- In PowerPoint for Windows, press Alt+= to insert an equation.
- Type
infty, then press Space.

Outlook: steps depend on the version
New Outlook for Windows
- Start a message or reply, then place the cursor where the symbol belongs.
- Press Windows key + period.
- In the Emoji and more window, open Symbols and choose ∞.
Classic Outlook for Windows
While composing a message, choose Insert > Symbol, then select infinity. Microsoft’s Outlook symbol insertion instructions cover the menu workflow.

Outlook for Mac
Microsoft’s Mac instructions say to choose Edit > Emoji & Symbols, then select the infinity character. The cited guidance is labeled for Office 2016 for Mac, so later releases may use different labels. See Microsoft’s Mac symbol insertion page.

On a Mac, use the app’s symbol menu or the character and symbol viewer rather than Windows’ Alt+X conversion. Microsoft’s cited Mac menu paths are Insert > Advanced Symbol in Word, Insert > Symbol in Excel and PowerPoint, and Edit > Emoji & Symbols in Outlook. The page is labeled for Office 2016 for Mac, so later versions may differ.

Math AutoCorrect commands are documented for supported desktop Office apps, but Microsoft says they are not supported in Office web apps. If a command does not work, use the app’s symbol picker instead. See the Math AutoCorrect guide.
If ∞ is missing or looks wrong
- It does not appear in the picker: try a different font. Fonts do not all include the same characters; Segoe UI Symbol is one option Microsoft points to in its symbol guidance.
- Alt+X converts the wrong text: select only
221Ebefore using the shortcut, especially if it is adjacent to other hexadecimal characters. inftystays as text: confirm you are inside an equation box, using a supported desktop app and a compatible equation mode. Math AutoCorrect commands are case-sensitive.- The Outlook instructions do not match: check whether you have New Outlook or classic Outlook; use the corresponding Windows steps above.
Make repeated insertion easier
If you insert infinity often in Word, you can configure a custom AutoCorrect replacement. Choose a short text string that will not collide with words or abbreviations you type naturally, then test it in the document. The replacement is user-configured; it is not a universal Office shortcut.
