Google calls these marks diacritics. The menu is documented for English (US), does not offer a variant for every character, and disables alphabet-key repeat while enabled.
How to type an accented letter on a Chromebook
- Hold down the physical keyboard key for the letter you want to accent, such as e.
- When the character menu appears, press Tab or the right arrow to move into it.
- Use the arrow keys to highlight the character you want, then press Enter or Space. You can also select an offered character by pressing its number key or clicking it. Continuing to type can insert the highlighted option.
The menu only shows variants available for the held key, so it may not contain the character you need. Google’s instructions describe using a physical keyboard; they do not list supported Chromebook models or apps. Google’s Chromebook Help page provides the current user-facing instructions.
Turn the accent menu on or off
Use this settings path to find the option. Labels or locations may vary as ChromeOS settings change:
- Select the time area on the shelf, then open Settings.
- Go to Device > Keyboard > Change input settings.
- Under Inputs and keyboards, open More next to English (US).
- Under Physical keyboard, turn accents and special characters on or off. Chromium’s setting text gives the label as Show accent marks and special characters.
Switch the option off if holding a letter key brings up the menu when you intended to repeat that letter. Chromium’s setting description says the feature turns off repeat key presses for alphabet keys while enabled, and is only available for English (US). Chromium’s setting text corroborates that limitation.

Other ways to enter accents on ChromeOS
If you type accented characters often, or the long-press menu does not include the marks you need, ChromeOS documents other input methods. The best fit depends on whether you prefer a layout change, a dead-key sequence, or a modifier shortcut; Google does not compare their speed.

Use the US International layout
Google documents the US International layout’s dead-key sequences and AltGr combinations for characters including é, ñ, ü, ö, ä, and ç. These sequences use a different input method from the long-press menu; consult Google’s accent-mark instructions for the documented combinations.

Use Alt combinations
Google lists these combinations for the English (US) keyboard:
- Alt + i for ô
- Alt + e for é
- Alt + u for ë
- Alt + n for ñ
- Alt + grave accent for è
Google notes that accents are not available for all characters. Check the support instructions if a combination does not produce the character you need.

Add and switch input methods
To use a different keyboard language, add its input method in ChromeOS settings. Google documents Ctrl + Shift + Space to cycle through input methods and Ctrl + Space to return. See Google’s instructions for adding and switching keyboard input methods for the setup steps.

Google’s support page explains how to use and disable the menu, while Chromium’s setting description limits its availability to English (US). Neither source establishes compatibility for every Chromebook model, app, locale, or keyboard layout, so availability may differ in a particular setup.

The feature was announced in Chrome 105 Enterprise and Education release notes as planned for ChromeOS 106; that announcement is historical context, not evidence that it arrived on every device at a particular time. Google Chromebook Product Manager Jean-Sebastien Boos also described enabling the setting and long-pressing a letter in an April 10, 2024 productivity article: Chromebook tips and tricks.
