Some refrigerators use a dedicated Ice Maker or Ice Maker Off button; others use a navigation-panel setting, Family Hub’s Fridge Manager, or SmartThings on supported models. If the panel does not match these examples, look up the refrigerator’s model number and follow its manual—Samsung says control layouts vary.
Check whether the ice maker is off
Look at the refrigerator display for an Ice Maker Off indicator. On many Samsung models, a lit indicator means ice production is disabled. Some Top Freezer models use an Ice On indicator instead; that should be lit for production. Refrigerators with two ice makers may show separate status indicators, so check the one for the maker you want to use.
If you are unsure which controls apply, find your refrigerator’s model number and open its user manual. Samsung’s UK troubleshooting guide notes that control-panel layouts vary by model.
Turn on the ice maker using your control panel
Navigation-button panels
- Wake the display if it is dark.
- Use the navigation or center control to select the blinking Ice Maker indicator.
- Use the arrow controls to choose On.
- Confirm the selection when prompted, following the on-screen instructions or your model’s manual.
This is a common sequence, not a universal one. Samsung’s Australia support guide describes control-panel variations and model-specific operation.

Dedicated Ice Maker or Ice Maker Off button
On some models, press the dedicated Ice Maker or Ice Maker Off control. Certain panels require holding the button for about three seconds. Check the display afterward: production should be enabled, and an Ice Maker Off status should no longer be active. Samsung’s Gulf support instructions describe a button-based control, but the exact action depends on the model.
Family Hub, SmartThings, and dual-ice-maker models
On some Family Hub refrigerators, use Fridge Manager to check the ice-maker setting. Supported smart models may also expose an ice-maker control in SmartThings. For a dual-maker refrigerator, select the status for the desired maker; do not assume that enabling one automatically enables the other. Samsung’s Canada guide to dual ice makers explains that the two makers have separate operation and startup guidance.

Allow time for the first ice
After installation, Samsung UK advises waiting at least 12 hours before expecting ice. A bucket may take 24 hours or more to fill. Samsung gives a typical rate of 10–12 cubes every 45–60 minutes, depending on temperature, usage, and ice-maker type; it is not a guaranteed rate for every refrigerator.
For first use, Samsung UK recommends letting the maker run for 1–2 days and discarding the first 1–3 batches. Samsung Canada likewise advises running dual makers for 1–2 days and discarding the ice produced. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent test results.

If the ice maker is on but makes no ice
Check these simple issues before treating the problem as a failed component:
- Bucket: Make sure the ice bucket is correctly seated and that nothing other than ice is obstructing it. Follow the model’s instructions for checking the bucket seal.
- Door or compartment: Confirm the relevant door closes fully and the compartment seal is not preventing proper closure.
- Test button: If the basic checks do not help, use the built-in ice-maker test according to the refrigerator’s manual. Test-button location and reset steps vary by model.
Samsung’s US ice-maker troubleshooting guide includes bucket and test-button checks. Follow its power-cycle advice only when the guide’s stated test-button troubleshooting conditions apply; do not use an improvised reset sequence.

When to contact Samsung support
If the ice maker does not respond to its model-specific test after you have followed the applicable reset steps, contact Samsung support or arrange service. Do not order a replacement based only on the refrigerator brand: any replacement assembly must match the exact refrigerator model, and Samsung’s support material does not establish a universal part number.
