On Windows 11 builds that include the new Context menu settings page, go to Settings > Personalization > Context menu, then switch Arrange primary actions inline under Additional options on or off. Right-click a file in File Explorer to check the layout.
What the setting changes
The option changes where File Explorer displays its primary commands; it does not add or remove them. When enabled, Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, and Share appear inline in the context menu. When disabled, those commands stay in a compact row of icons. Microsoft describes the two layouts and identifies the primary commands.

Turn the setting on or off in Settings
- Press Win+I to open Settings.
- Select Personalization, then open Context menu.
- Under Additional options, switch Arrange primary actions inline on or off.
- Close Settings and right-click a file in File Explorer to see the selected layout.
This route applies to builds that expose the new Context menu page. The setting location is documented in a community step-by-step guide; Microsoft confirms the broader Settings experience under Personalization.
If “Context menu” or the toggle is missing
The redesigned context-menu customization began rolling out to Windows Insiders with Experimental build 26340.9212, announced on August 17, 2026. The rollout is staged, so not every Insider necessarily sees it immediately, and the available sources do not establish that the setting is generally available on all Windows 11 installations. Check your Windows build and update channel, then install available updates. Microsoft’s August 17 announcement describes the rollout. Its September 11, 2026 Experimental-channel notes describe further changes to the evolving experience.

Optional registry alternative
A community tutorial documents a current-user registry value for this preference. Registry editing is an advanced alternative, not a Microsoft-documented requirement; use the Settings toggle when it is available. Before changing the registry, make sure you understand how to restore the original value.
- Open Registry Editor and go to

Enabledto1to turn the inline layout on, or0to turn it off.
The registry path and value are reported by ElevenForum’s tutorial, not documented in Microsoft’s announcement. That tutorial also says the preference does not change the classic menu opened with Shift+right-click.
