This setting also affects Num Lock and Scroll Lock, so Windows does not offer a built-in option for enabling a sound for Caps Lock alone.
Turn the Caps Lock sound on or off in Settings
The normal Settings method changes the setting for your current Windows user account and does not require administrator rights.
- Open Settings. You can press Windows logo key + U, or go to Start > Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard.
- Scroll to the Sticky, Filter, and Toggle keys section.
- Find Play a sound whenever you press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock.
- Turn the switch On to enable the sound, or Off to disable it.
The change takes effect immediately. Press Caps Lock on a physical keyboard to test it.
What the Toggle keys setting controls
Despite the reference to Caps Lock in the setting, this is not a Caps Lock-only control. When enabled, Windows plays a tone when you press any of these keys:

Windows 11 has no built-in Settings control that enables the Caps Lock tone while suppressing the tones for Num Lock and Scroll Lock.
Use Control Panel instead
If the Settings switch does not work, or you prefer the classic interface, use Control Panel:
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard easier to use.
- Under Make it easier to type, select Turn on Toggle Keys to enable the sound. Clear it to disable the sound.
- Select Apply, then OK.
This is the same Toggle Keys feature exposed through a different interface. It also applies to the current user profile rather than every account on the PC.
Change the setting with PowerShell
For a script or a quick per-user change, open PowerShell as the affected Windows user and run one of these commands.

Enable the sound:
Set-ItemProperty -Path “HKCU:\Control Panel\Accessibility\ToggleKeys” -Name “Flags” -Value “63”
Disable the sound:
Set-ItemProperty -Path “HKCU:\Control Panel\Accessibility\ToggleKeys” -Name “Flags” -Value “62”
Sign out and sign back in, or restart Windows, after changing the registry value so the change is applied.
These commands modify:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Accessibility\ToggleKeys

Because the path starts with HKEY_CURRENT_USER or HKCU:, this is not a system-wide configuration. Other Windows users have their own Toggle Keys setting.
Fix Toggle Keys when no sound is audible
If the setting is on but pressing Caps Lock produces no tone, check the following before changing advanced settings:
- Test with a physical keyboard. The Toggle Keys tones are intended for physical keyboard presses. Touch keyboards and the on-screen keyboard do not trigger these tones according to the documented behavior.
- Check the active audio output. Make sure Windows is sending sound to the speakers, headphones, dock, or monitor you are actually using.
- Raise the output volume. Toggle Keys controls the key tones, not the volume of other Windows sounds. Check the volume mixer as well as the main volume control.
- Try the Control Panel switch. Turn off Turn on Toggle Keys, select Apply, turn it on again, and apply the change.
- Sign out or restart. This is especially relevant after using the registry or PowerShell method.
There is no single confirmed cause for every case in which Toggle Keys appears enabled but remains silent. Some reported cases continued after a restart and were resolved through Control Panel; an isolated report required resetting Windows. A reset should be treated as a last resort after checking audio output and trying the Control Panel method.
When the problem is an on-screen notification, not a sound
A Caps Lock indicator that appears on screen is different from the Windows Toggle Keys tone. Laptop manufacturers and keyboard utilities can display their own lock-key notifications.

For example, OEM or peripheral software such as Logitech Options+ and MSI components, including MSI NBFoundation, can generate Caps Lock or Num Lock pop-ups. Turning off Play a sound whenever you press Caps Lock, Num Lock, or Scroll Lock may therefore leave the visual notification unchanged.
If you want to remove a pop-up rather than a tone, check the notification settings for software supplied with your laptop, keyboard, or motherboard. Look for options mentioning Caps Lock, Num Lock, lock-key notifications, or on-screen display.
Do not confuse Toggle Keys with Narrator
Narrator has its own sounds. Microsoft documents a Narrator sound described as “Caps lock on”, which is associated with pressing Shift while Caps Lock is on. That is separate from the ordinary tone produced when you press Caps Lock.
Changing Narrator sound settings will not enable or disable the normal Caps Lock keypress tone. Use the Toggle keys setting under Accessibility > Keyboard for that purpose.

What this setting does not do
- It does not disable Caps Lock.
- It does not stop Caps Lock from changing between uppercase and lowercase input.
- It does not control only Caps Lock; Num Lock and Scroll Lock are included.
- It does not automatically configure other Windows user accounts.
- It does not necessarily remove manufacturer-generated visual notifications.
FAQ
Can I enable a sound for Caps Lock only?
No. Windows 11’s built-in Toggle keys setting combines Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock. There is no standard Settings option for enabling only the Caps Lock tone.
Does enabling Toggle Keys disable Caps Lock?
No. Toggle Keys only provides audio feedback when the lock keys change state. Caps Lock continues to work normally.
Do I need administrator rights to turn on the Caps Lock sound?
No. The Settings method changes the Toggle Keys preference for the current user and normally does not require administrator permission.
Why do I see a Caps Lock pop-up even after turning off the sound?
The pop-up may come from laptop, keyboard, or peripheral software rather than Windows Toggle Keys. Check utilities such as Logitech Options+ or MSI software for their own on-screen display or lock-key notification settings.

Does the setting apply to every user on the computer?

Will the on-screen keyboard trigger the Toggle Keys tone?
