Choose Vibrate instead if you want calls and notifications to vibrate. For more control over which people, apps, or alerts can interrupt, use Do Not Disturb.
Mute your Android phone with the volume controls
- Press either volume button to open the volume panel.
- Tap the Ring icon or control above or beside the slider until it shows Mute. If you prefer tactile alerts, select Vibrate.
- To turn ringing back on, open the volume panel again and switch the control back to Ring. The icon and exact placement can vary by phone.
If a call is already ringing, pressing a volume button silences that ring. It does not decline or end the call. Google’s Android volume and sound guide explains the Ring control and volume options.
Use Do Not Disturb to control interruptions
Do Not Disturb is a better choice when you want to decide which calls, messages, apps, alarms, or other alerts may still make a sound or interrupt you.
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Do Not Disturb. If it is not visible, swipe down again to see more Quick Settings tiles, or search Settings for “Do Not Disturb.”
- To set exceptions or a duration, open the Do Not Disturb settings. On supported Android 14-and-newer devices, the route is Settings > Modes > Do Not Disturb. Choose the mode’s notification filters and set how long it should remain on.
Depending on the options available on your phone, filters can allow or block selected people, calls, messages, apps, alarms, media, reminders, and calendar events. You can choose to leave it on until you turn it off, set a period, or have the phone prompt you for a duration. Google also documents an option to allow a call if the same person calls twice within 15 minutes; whether that applies depends on the selected filter settings. See Google’s guide to Modes and Do Not Disturb.

Mute, Vibrate, and Do Not Disturb: what changes?
| Choice | What it does | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mute | Turns off the Ring sound using the volume panel. Other sound streams, such as media or alarms, have separate controls. | Quickly silencing ring and notification sounds. |
| Vibrate | Uses vibration for alerts where supported and configured, rather than Ring sound. | Getting a tactile alert without an audible ring. |
| Do Not Disturb | Applies interruption filters. Selected people, apps, or sound categories may still be allowed, depending on your settings. | Quiet periods when you need exceptions, a duration, or a schedule. |
Why lowering volume may not mute calls or alerts
Android has separate volume controls for media, calls, ringing, notifications, and alarms. Pressing a volume button may adjust a different stream depending on what you are doing. For example, lowering media volume can silence a video or game while leaving incoming calls and alarms audible. Open the expanded volume panel to find the control you need; use the Ring control for ringing rather than assuming the media slider controls every sound.

Android labels and paths vary by version and phone maker. Google’s newer Modes directions apply to Android 14 and later; on older phones, Do Not Disturb may appear under Settings > Sound & vibration > Do Not Disturb or Do Not Disturb preferences. Search Settings for “mute,” “sound,” or “Do Not Disturb” if you cannot find the exact label. For a device-specific route, check your phone maker’s support instructions.
