On most Lenovo laptops with a backlit keyboard, hold Fn and press the key marked with a keyboard-backlight icon—usually the Spacebar—to cycle through the available modes. On supported models, Lenovo Vantage also provides an on-screen control. First check that your laptop has backlight hardware; the shortcut and available modes vary by model.
Before you start: confirm your Lenovo has a backlit keyboard
Look for a keyboard-backlight icon, usually on the Spacebar or Esc key. If neither key has the icon, Lenovo says the PC normally does not include the feature. For model-specific confirmation, search your computer’s User Guide or Hardware Maintenance Manual for “backlight” in the Lenovo Support guide.
Way 1: Use the Lenovo keyboard shortcut
Hold Fn and press the key with the keyboard-backlight icon, most commonly the Spacebar. Press the shortcut repeatedly to cycle through the modes available on your model.
On Lenovo models with a standard white backlight, the usual sequence is:

| Fn + Spacebar again | High or bright |
| Fn + Spacebar again | Off |
The sequence varies. Some models provide only two modes; Lenovo lists the IdeaPad Slim 3 15AMN8 and IdeaPad 3 15IAU7 as examples. Check your model’s guide if the icon is on another key or the shortcut behaves differently. Lenovo model guides describe Fn + Space as the backlight toggle or adjustment shortcut on supported devices (L13 Gen 4 guide; Yoga 9i guide).
Legion gaming laptop exception
On supported Lenovo Legion models, Fn + Spacebar may cycle through lighting effects rather than simply switching a white backlight between dim and bright.
- Fn + Spacebar: cycles through factory lighting effects.
- Fn + Up Arrow: increases keyboard-light brightness.
- Fn + Down Arrow: decreases keyboard-light brightness.
Depending on the model, customize lighting in Legion Space or Lenovo Vantage. Controls and effects vary across the Legion range; see the Legion 7a guide.

What to do if the Lenovo keyboard backlight does not turn on
1. Check for backlight hardware
If there is no backlight symbol on the Spacebar or Esc key, do not assume a driver is missing. Lenovo identifies the backlight as a physical feature; a driver cannot add LEDs to a keyboard that was sold without them. Confirm your exact configuration in the Lenovo Support guide.
2. Test the shortcut before troubleshooting Windows
Lenovo recommends testing Fn + Space in the computer’s BIOS/UEFI setup utility or in Windows Safe Mode. If the backlight works there but not after Windows starts, the hardware is more likely to be functioning; continue with the firmware and software checks below (Lenovo troubleshooting guide).
3. Update the BIOS if it works in BIOS but not Windows
If the backlight responds in BIOS/UEFI but not in Windows, Lenovo’s troubleshooting guidance recommends updating the BIOS for your exact model. Download it from Lenovo Support and follow the update instructions carefully. The symptom usually points to firmware, hotkey, or Windows-side configuration rather than missing backlight hardware.

- Search Windows for Device Manager and open it.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the relevant keyboard entry.
- Select Update driver.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Updating a driver will not add a backlight to a model without backlight hardware.
