In desktop Chrome, open More > Settings > Privacy and security > Security, then select Enhanced protection under Safe Browsing. Enhanced protection adds more proactive checks for potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions, but it also sends more browsing-related information to Google than Standard protection.

Turn on Enhanced protection in desktop Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. At the top right, select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Select Privacy and security, then Security.
  4. Under Safe Browsing, choose Enhanced protection.

These are Google’s published desktop steps. The layout and labels may differ on mobile. See Google’s instructions for choosing a Safe Browsing protection level in Chrome.

What Enhanced protection does

Google describes Enhanced protection as Chrome’s most secure Safe Browsing level. It checks for known threats and potential new dangers, and can warn about potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions—including ones Google did not previously know about. It can also warn you if a password has been compromised in a data breach. As Google Chrome Help puts it, “When you turn on Enhanced protection, you’ll receive warnings about potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions, even ones Google didn’t previously know about.”

These checks can help surface threats, but they are not a guarantee that every harmful site, file, or extension will be detected.

What information Enhanced protection shares with Google

The added checks involve sending more browsing-related information to Google’s Safe Browsing service. Google says this can include the URL of a site, a small sample of page content, downloads, extension activity, and system information. Chrome may also scan suspicious downloads. Google says the information is used for security purposes.

For comparison, Standard protection checks sites against Google’s lists and generally sends an obfuscated portion of URLs through a privacy server. It may send full URLs and snippets of page content when suspicious behavior is detected. Enhanced protection sends additional information in more circumstances, including when Google has limited information about a site. Google explains the data handling in its Safe Browsing privacy overview.

How the Chrome protection levels differ

Setting What it checks Information sent to Google
Enhanced protection Known and potential new dangers, including potentially dangerous sites, downloads, and extensions. More browsing-related information in more circumstances, including URLs, small page-content samples, downloads, extension activity, and system information.
Standard protection Known dangers, with additional checks when suspicious behavior is detected. Generally an obfuscated portion of URLs through a privacy server; full URLs and page-content snippets may be sent when suspicious behavior is detected.
No protection Safe Browsing is turned off. Google does not describe Safe Browsing checks as active in this mode.

Google says Standard protection is on by default and recommends against turning Safe Browsing off. The choice is yours: Enhanced protection increases proactive checking and data sharing, while Standard protection offers checks with less information sent in ordinary cases.

Manage Enhanced Safe Browsing for your Google Account

Google also provides an account-level Enhanced Safe Browsing setting. You can manage it in your Google Account under Security & sign-in > Enhanced Safe Browsing for your Account. Google says turning on this account setting also enables Enhanced protection in Chrome when you are signed into Chrome and Sync is on without a custom passphrase. Account-level protection can connect security signals across Google services; it does not guarantee protection against every threat. See Google’s account setting instructions.

If Enhanced protection is unavailable

If the setting is missing or cannot be changed, your browser may be managed by an employer or school. Google’s Chrome Enterprise documentation says that when an administrator activates a Safe Browsing policy, users cannot change or override that policy in Chrome. Check with your organization’s administrator if you need the setting changed. See Google’s Chrome policy documentation.
