To turn on dark mode in Proxmox VE, sign in to its web interface, open the user menu in the upper-right corner, then select Color Theme → Proxmox Dark → Apply. The built-in theme is part of Proxmox VE’s web interface; you do not need an extension or separate app.
Choose Proxmox Dark or let the browser decide
Proxmox VE offers two relevant choices in the theme selector. Default (auto) follows the browser’s preferred color scheme. Proxmox Dark selects the dark theme directly, even when the browser preference is light.
In auto mode, a difference between browsers can be expected if they have different appearance preferences. Proxmox’s VE 7.4 announcement says the interface detects the preference through the CSS prefers-color-scheme feature and also supports manual switching. See the Proxmox VE 7.4 announcement.
Set the theme in the web interface
- Sign in to the Proxmox VE web interface.
- Open the user menu at the top right.
- Choose Color Theme, then select Proxmox Dark.
- Press Apply.
This menu path was provided by Proxmox staff in a 2023 forum reply: Dark mode for GUI. If your installed version shows different labels, check its version-specific interface or documentation; the available evidence does not establish that the labels are identical in every release.

If the theme changes back
A Proxmox staff reply says the theme choice is stored in a browser cookie. If your selection does not persist, check whether cookies for the Proxmox site are being retained; clearing them may reset the choice. This is a troubleshooting lead, not a complete diagnosis for every browser or Proxmox version.
When Proxmox Dark arrived
The built-in dark theme is not a new 2026 feature. Proxmox announced the integrated web-interface theme with VE 7.4, released on March 23, 2023. The date and theme are also listed on the official Proxmox VE 7.4 training page.
