What AutoSave does—and which documents it covers
Microsoft 365 AutoSave continuously saves changes to the cloud-stored original in supported Word, Excel, and PowerPoint workflows. Microsoft says it is enabled by default when a file is stored on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online (Microsoft Support: What is AutoSave?).
“All your documents” has an important limit: this feature is for eligible files in OneDrive or SharePoint, not local files on your PC or Mac. Local files can still be saved manually, and AutoRecover may help recover work after a problem, but it is a separate feature—not continuous cloud AutoSave. (Microsoft Support: What you should know about AutoSave)
Turn on AutoSave for a document
- Save the file to OneDrive or SharePoint. In Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, select File > Save As, choose a OneDrive or SharePoint location, and save. For an existing cloud file, open it from within the app using File > Open, then browse to its OneDrive or SharePoint location.
- Check the AutoSave switch. Find AutoSave in the app header and turn it on if it is off. If the file is not yet in OneDrive or SharePoint, the app may prompt you to choose a cloud location.
Opening a file from File Explorer, Finder, or a recent-file shortcut can be why AutoSave is missing or off. Use the app’s File > Open route to select the cloud-stored file instead. For Microsoft’s current instructions, see Turn on AutoSave.

- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.

Make AutoSave the default for cloud files
The default is configured separately in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Set it in each app where you want the behavior:
- Windows: Open the app and select File > Options > Save. Select AutoSave OneDrive and SharePoint Online files by default, then confirm the setting. Repeat in each of the three apps.
- Mac: Open the app’s Preferences > Save settings and select Turn on AutoSave by default. Repeat in each app as needed.
These defaults apply to eligible OneDrive and SharePoint files; they do not switch on AutoSave for local documents. Microsoft’s platform-specific steps are available in Turn on autosave in Microsoft 365 apps.

Choose the right file location
For AutoSave, the location depends on who owns and needs access to the document:
- OneDrive personal: Suitable for your personal cloud files.
- OneDrive work or school: Suitable for files associated with your organization’s account and access rules.
- SharePoint: Suitable when the document belongs in a team or organization’s shared workspace.
If the file must remain only on your computer, use manual saving and consider AutoRecover for recovery protection. Neither is equivalent to AutoSave writing changes continuously to a cloud original.

Fix a missing or unavailable AutoSave switch
Check these common causes first:
- The file is local: Move or save it to OneDrive or SharePoint to use AutoSave.
- The file was opened outside the app: Open it through File > Open and select the cloud location.
- The default is disabled: Check File > Options > Save on Windows or Preferences > Save on Mac.
- The file format is old: Formats such as .doc, .xls, or .ppt may prevent AutoSave.
- OneDrive sync is paused: Resume synchronization and check whether AutoSave becomes available.
- The file or app state is incompatible: Embedded Office files, PowerPoint slide show mode, and some workbook features can block AutoSave.
- Your account or app access is limited: Verify that you are signed in with an active Microsoft 365 subscription for the documented workflow.
Specific blockers vary by app and platform. If these checks do not resolve the issue, consult Microsoft’s AutoSave guidance for the affected file type and app.

AutoSave updates the cloud original continuously. If you want to experiment without changing that original, use File > Save a Copy before editing. Microsoft notes that Save As may not be available for files opened from OneDrive or SharePoint. To inspect or restore an earlier version, use Version History.
